New Guy with question
I have been lurking for a month or two and finally jumped in.
I bought my first Dodge a few months back, a 2006 Durango LTD with the Hemi. Love the vehicle so far and I could not wait to start the modding game.
I just installed a MIT from Airaid and the Hypertech power programer. No codes or check engine light, but I am getting a funny sound about three seconds after the rig shifts into second. I get what sounds like a puff of air/compression coming back out of the air box area ? No other time does this sound occur and the Durango runs great with theses mods. It really sets off the Corsa exhaust I am running as well.
Thanks for the nice forum and hopefully someone has some ideas for me...

First off, congrats on the new ride. I am looking to do the same sort of mods on the wifes durango here in then near future, it's nice to hear some feedback from someone who has them.
As far as the sound, this is a complete guess, but maybe it has something to do with the back pressure when shifting and your hearing it through the intake. Like I said, that is just a guess. I was recently working on a carburated car with the intake off and we would get a little puff of air coming out when the car would die. The car had sat for 10 years and the exhaust was all plugged up and I think it was creating so much back pressure, the intake was the path of least resistance for the pressure to be released.
It could be the power you are putting out in that RPM / gear range could just have a little bit of extra pressure that couldn't make it out of the exhaust.
Let us know if you find out anything else.....since I am just shooting from the hip on that one.

Thanks for the info and the welcome.
It is odd as it only happens at low RPM's, as in below 2300 when we are put putting around the local roads. Under any kind of acceleration the noise never occurs. I made sure the new intake tube is all tight and installed correctly. I thought maybe it had something to do with removing that funky air box type unit that sits on the fan shroud. This gets removed when the new intake tube goes on and I do not know what this box is for ?
The Hypertech unit is #50014 and the install went fine with no issues. I had no problems with the Hypertech unit as was posted a few times in this forum in the past. I re-checked the engine after the test drive and no new codes were thrown/present. I wanted to make sure that noise desribed above was not detonation, but that is more of a "pinging" noise compared to what I am getting at low RPM's. Full throttle runs were fine and the Hypertech did make a "seat of the pants" difference.
I am pretty much finished with the performane mods (Corsa, MIT, K&N filter, and Hypertech). I am a weekend warrior at best and I really do not want to mess with anything else. Thanks for the feedback and looking forward to enjoying the forum...

As it relates to my first post. The dealer said a "re-flash" was available for our Durango and that was done. The miss/surge is still happening.
I do not have any experience driving a vehicle with the MDS type technology. When does this "kick in" ? I spoke to the service manager about this and he said since this/my concern only happens under 2,000 RPM's weather cruising at highway speeds and using light throttle to accelerate or slowly pulling out of a stop sign, that the MDS could be activating/de-activating and causing what seems like a miss/surge. Does this sound possible ? Thanks for any advice.....

If you didn't set the PCM back to stock with the Hypertech, and the dealer flashed over your tune, you probably lost the use of the Hypertech to re-program the PCM. That example would be the unfortunate result if you had a SuperChips tuner so I'm expecting the same results. The dealer cant read the PCM program flashed with the tuner so of course they suggested a reflash. Oops!
Note to anyone with a tuner: set the program back to stock before taking the vehicle in for service. Otherwise, even if it is in there for something else, you may get flashed and you may have more issues from there. Gen1 Durango's were getting what was termed the "flash of death" to retard pinging. However, it does so by taking out about 75 HP so there is no ping. Ouch! Once Death Flashed, you can't go back and have to get a tuner or a custom flash (or live with it.) If dealer flashed over a tuner flash, the tuner stops recognizing the flash as what it was and becomes VIN locked out.

I did return to stock tune before I took the truck in. I have used Predator units before on my vettes and a few Jet products in the past as well. This mis/surge was in the truck when I purchased it. We have not used the truck a lot since purchase until I installed the Corsa, MIT, etc.
I also think part of the problem is that with the different intake system and the new exhaust I might be hearing/feeling the MDS go off and on more ????? The dealer found no error codes at all. The truck/engine is not really broken in yet at 2,000 miles, however I am getting around 18.5 MPG highway so the fuel mileage is in line. It does seem to be running a little rich though based on the smell at start up and the soot building up on the exhaust tips after driving.
This just could be my active **** imagination as I have no experience with the MDS.........

That's probably what you hearing, the MDS kicking in. You can't hear it with the stock exhaust and intake, but I can defiantely hear it with the Chrysler/Borla exhaust, there's an initial "burp" and then theexhaust has a lower more rumbly sound, more like a 4 cylinder than an 8 cylinder. They should have put a light on the dash for the MDS; maybe someone will come up with an aftermarket light kit.
The best way to make sure you're using MDS is to use the cruise control. It's the steady throttle that kicks it in.

I could have been chasing a ghost then. I have never owned a vehicle with this cylinder deactivation technology before. It is funny as it almost sounds like a miss then like you said a "burp" as it seems like compression is being pushed back through the engine (for the lack of a better description).
I just need to get used to that "miss/blip" under low RPM's I guess. As stated before it only happens right after the shift into second under light throttle or at highway speeds when light throttle is applied, both under 2,000 RPM's. No other time does it happen.
I think the best thing is for me to be less ****, use more throttle, and enjoy the power of the hemi with the Corsa, MIT, and the Hypertech...... [sm=goodidea.gif][sm=gears.gif]
