Horsepower Gain
ORIGINAL: 71RoadRunner
You will free up some horsepower, lose some weight and the engine will rev up slightly quicker and easier, but you will also develope a problem by doing this. In the older cars you could do this without any problems what so ever, but not in the vehicles made for the past decade or so. Modern vehicles have their defroster using the A/C compressor to dry and clear the windows of humidity, fog, frost and ice. With the A/C disabled or removed the defroster will only blow cold air that doesn't remove or dry off the windows. Your heater will be fine, but your defrosters will be useless.

i thought the defroster were electrical pulses that go through those wires in the back window. as for the front it is the heater, isn't all I'm doing is deciding to have it directed at the window instead of me.
No Nick he is talking about your front defroster. Your rear uses the lines. 71RR brought up a very good point that I had forgotten about. In the winter your front defroster would be useless. That would be very bad in Michigan!

i still don't know why, so anyone care to explain. o BTW who ever mentioned my water pump, it is run off of the timing chain i think.
That's a good point. An Intrepid is a family sedan and is built for comfort.
Nickoman. I applaud your efforts, but your car is worth more with the AC, than without. Even if you don't like it, your girlfriend may. So it may be that is the difference between a good date and a great date if you know what I mean. Fix the Evaporator and get a 50 shot of NOS for those special times.

And yes, I know that the rear window defroster uses a series of wires that pass electric current through them to heat up the glass to remove snow, ice, frost, fog and humidity.
i am unclear on something here....while i do know that the compressor cycles when the defrost is on, it will technically still work without the compressor there....it is warm air that makes the windshield defrost, so i dont see why the AC would make any difference..the ramcharger AC sure as hell doesnt work, but the defrost does.
i cant afford a faster car, I'm 18 and still paying this one off. it isn't worth a 1240 dollar investment to fix the air conditioning on a 6000 dollar car, that in 4 years when i get rid of it will be worth a sh*t load less. Todd, I'm actually managing quite fine on those 90+ degree days with the windows open and the air conditioning just pushing out regular temperature air, but it is pushing the really hot air out the windows. I'm not removing anything but the belt, which i could very easily put back on when needed. the compressor will still be there, just not run by the belt. but logically the compressor effect on the defroster makes no sense at all to me. i thought all i was doing was changing the direction of the hot air to the window.
nicko, i dont use my AC either...and we have the same climate...the only time i use my AC is on the highway...because its too noisy at high speeds...

my radio is to loud to notice the highway noise, but the fresh air is always welcome
