All you can do try it and see what happens. I don't think it can really hurt anything.

i am unclear on something here....while i do know that the compressor cycles when the defrost is on, it will technically still work without the compressor there....it is warm air that makes the windshield defrost, so i dont see why the AC would make any difference..the ramcharger AC sure as hell doesnt work, but the defrost does.
I don't either, but they do on newer cars and trucks. You will have to ask a certified auto A/C tech to find out the technical explanation, I couldn't believe it either when it happened to my grandmother and they said it was the A/C compressor having gone bad that caused her loss of defrost. I argued the same point until I looked into it and found out that they were right and it does require the A/C compressor to work. My '88 Shelby Z didn't even have the compressor in it and the defrost worked fine, this is something they have changed since. That is why the defrost is fine in the Ramcharger, it's older and didn't use the A/C compressor.

Maybe I missed someone saying why the compressor runs when in defrost, but here's why.

The system, AC, is never used in the winter. So the system is activated during defrost mode to keep the system circulated and the compressor lubed. Other than that it serves no other purpose.

taking the belt off wont harm anything, you cant change timing on a car that doesnt have a distributor and is controlled by the computer and as for the defrost it will still function as before because the electrical actuators that move the vent doors in the main airbox under the dash will still go to the correct position with or without the compressor running.

But anyway you look at it, you arent going to make that intrepid go any faster... it wasnt built for speed. If you want something fater then go get a really cheap neon, buy a turbo kit, and you will end up at about the same $6000 your intrepid is worth.

Why does everything always end up with speed when your 18? I was the same way I guess, I had a Honda CBR600 and a Toyota Supra when I was 18... Now that I am 36 I know when I want speed, I just drive a Viper and I am good for a month or so(the Grand National is only good for straight-line speed).

I'm not looking for speed so much as a little boast to beat my friends 03 neon sxt and 00 explorer sport i always tie.

whoever moved this, thanks for ruining my thread. no one comes down here except me Todd and occasionally a mod just to check up. anyways i just clipped that belt off tonight it is only 20 dollars for a new one. exactly what i wanted. i can physically feel the more power. i get closer to the pushed back in the seat feeling. defroster works as it should. the a/c is still blowing air, just not cold, so i can push the hot air out the windows. as of now it is perfect and exactly what i expected. i hope there are no long term effects.
