Default 2000 Plymouth Neon transmission shudder

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out a problem with my wife's 2000 Plymouth Neon with the 3 speed automatic. After getting up to about 50 mph, then decelerating for a stoplight/stop sign, the car has a vibration under the front of the car when it gets down around 20 mph. If i do the same thing, and decelerate to around 20 mph and hold it there, the car continues to shudder. But when i put the car into neutral, the problem goes away.

At first i thought it was a tire out of balance, so i rotated them, but the same thing was happening. I checked the suspension etc and didnt see anything obvious. Today i changed the trans fluid and filter and saw a lot of metal shavings on the magnet and in the fluid. After doing this the car was still acting the same.

I'm thinking of dropping it off for a dealer to look at but am afraid they'll tell me i need a new transmission. Any ideas before i bring it in?

You may have a drive axle causing the problem.

if u accelerate when its shuddering does it stop after u reach a certain speed. I had te same problem. mine would stop shuddering if i put it in first or neutral (yesminewas atx also)and ended uphaving to get my trans rebuilt.

Thats exactly what it does- when i put it in 2nd or neutral the shuddering goes away. i have a call into a local junkyard, they have a trans out of a 2001 dodge neon with 56K miles for $300 as a last resort.

does anyone know if a plymouth and dodge trans are interchangeable in 2000 and 2001?

thanks again!

yes you can use dodge neon parts in a plymouth neon. All neons were made in the same factory justdiffrent names.
