MPG consistancy sucks...
Does anyone notice that your MPG changes? Last night I made about a 50 mile trip(there and back). I have made that trip countless times with the gas needle baarely moving. I mean, it was on the full line and when I was done it was still on the full line. Then last night had a half tank. I drove the same trip driving the same as always. When I got back home I went through nearly a 1/4 tank of gas. What the heck??? Then I made a trip to PA. I had a full tank and when I got to PA i went through a 1/4 of a tank and had 3/4 left. Then on the way back I used up 1/2 a tank(twice as much) and only had 1/4 of a tank left.
Does anyone know why this happens? its really kinda dumb.

usually the tank gets over-full (as far as the sender is concerned) and the gauge can't read any difference until the level goes down, it gets really bad with any kind of aftermarket sender. the shape of the tank can vary what the gauge reads too.
Mine does that also.... it stays at full for around 50-75 miles....i think its cause when the tank is truly full, the fill hose also fill up and that more then likly holds 1-2 gallons and then you got to burn off 1-2 gallons befor e the fuel level sender will start moving!
Neon gas guages and gas consistency totally sucks *****.
Very, very few people don't have problems with MPG on their neon and at this point I don't believe them for crap when they say they get like 35+.
I've ranted about this plenty of times.

Neon gas gauges just suck in general, which is why I always go off the trip odometer, and it hasnt failed me once.
Just fill up the tank to the very top each time, reset the trip, and you have the most precise fuel range and MPG calculator known to man...Neon owners have been doing it since 1995

hmm...ok they suck. I don't think I will have to resort to a trip though. I mean...its not that bad lol. I try to keep my gas around half a tank. I dont fill up past that I let it go to about an 1/8 tank before I give it more gas. If you let it go all the way I would use a trip too. However every once in a while I will run my car pretty hard. So reading the trip could mess me up lol.

How is it precise? You're still calculating how many MPG you have going off the gauge as to when to fill up. Unless you're doing that...divide by the number you put in bs
