If i were you i would get a second generation years 2003-2005.
Neons arent available with 6 cylinders.
If your looking for more powerful neon you should get a r/t.
Neons are very good on gas between 26-29 around town and 32-34 on the highway cruising in 5th gear.
Only 1 major problems that happen to neons and thats the a leaky head gasket.

RE: wanting to buy neon..questions.....
Head gaskets were only on the 1st Gen Neons from the Ill. plant. They got a bad lot of gaskets in, other then that the 2nd Gens are a solid car. As long as you're not looking to mod the engine a lot you'll be fine otherwise the NGC computer system can be somewhat limiting at times. My Neon is basically stock except for a K&N drop in filter and a Flowmaster 50 Delta muffler and I think it's fairly peppy for a car that's so great on gas. Even though I've kind of decided to keep my car I'd still sell it if someone would be interested. It's a nice car, rust free, 38K miles with a few small mods(see my sig for a link to the car pics and mods) but I'd have to get $8500 out of it and even then I'd be about $500 down on my trade of my '04 Dodge Ram. Anyway, keep your head down and come back to us safe and sound and thanks for serving your country.

"Good on room inside" is a relative term. At 6'4"/280 lbs it's a tight fit for me. Guess if you were under 6' and less then 200 lbs it'd be ok. LOL.

The seats in these things are surprisingly comfortable for a small car.
