just a question about tire size..
am still researching/checking out new rims and tires....

wondering what is considered "low profile"

I know, from googling, that say a 205/r40 means the width of the tire is like 205mm and that the 40 means the height of the sidewall is 40% of the width..
but say you have a 195/r50 as an option is a 50 still low profile on say some 16 inch rims?.. or does this look more like a regular passenger car tire,..and would it fit under the fenders?

I know the lower profile tires LOOK better, but there are drawbacks like how they hold up it you hit a pot-hole....

so I guess I'm asking what the recommended tire size on 16 or 17 inch rims

I know this has probably been asked before, but maybe not so technically..

how wide can you go, and how tall of a side wall can you go...on stock Neon suspension

^^^^Dude why in every post do you post pics of your car? what is the point..

to pablo.

The biggest tire on 17's that you can fit on stock suspension is 40 series. On 16's im not sure but i guess you prob could fit a 45 series tire which has enough meat to withstand pot holes. Im currently 215-40-17 on stock srt-4 rims, ive hit my fair share of potholes but they are pretty good. A 50 series tire is the stock size on srt-4 rims so i guess it can be considered low profle.

But say if you upgraded your suspension you could easly run 45 to 50 series tires on a 17in rim. You could even put srt-4 struts so you could run bigger tires if you really worried about potholes

still a little confused when you mention a 40 "series" tire or a 50 "series" tire

like I looked up, the 40 or the 50 is all dependant on the first number...it's a percentage
so seems to me maybe a stock SRT tire with a 50 in the designation 'might' be low profile, but a 50 in say a 195/50 may not be

Correct, it depends on the rim size too. If you have a 15in rim then i would imagine a 50 series or 55 series wouldn't be considered low profile.

Well right now Im running 215/50/16s on my 04 sxt and they are the michelin sports very beefy and all season they act more like summer tires but pretty decent in snow and ice. I love the wideness of them .

that is just what the nickname is for the second number, i say anything 45 or lower is considered low profile, like at wal-mart, our (the techs) will not touch a tire that is below a 50 series.

the tire you want to get depends on the rim. what is the width of the rim. on neons, you cant go wider than a 7.5 inch rim or you will need spacers. if you do get a rim thats 7.5 wide, i would suggest a 215 tire ( first number designation for the width ). on 18's, you will need a 35 tire (the second number designation for the hieght). to keep the rim and tire package the same heighth as stock, you need to increase the tire heighth number by five. for example 18 inch rim: 215/35/r18 17 inch rim: 215/40/r17 and 16 inch rim: 215/45/r16. thats considering all those rims are 7.5 wide. when you go to a rim thats 7 wide, step down to a 205 series tire. hope this helps. oh and im not sure but i think the first number is a measurement in millimeters of the width and the second number is the percentage of the width. right before the third number( rim size) is the speed rating. also look at the treadwear number on the tire. the higher the number, "360" or better for example, the harder the rubber is and the tire will last you longer. also look at temp and traction ratings. they should at least be rated "A", "AA" , or better.
