I need MORE MPG
yea well no matter what you do w/e modifications you buy for your car wont be paid off by saving gas until roughly 1-3 years (depending on how much is spent), so if you are looking for any kind of significant savings and you want them INSTANTLY.... its not gonna happen, well unless you sell your neon and buy a hybrid or something and even then it still takes 6months-1year to see the returns from a hybrid.... so yea..... what we are suggesting to you will most certaintly make a difference but you wont all of a sudden go from 25-30 MPG to like 50mpg.... thats just down right impossible...... its all up to you about what you choose to buy or not to buy and put on your car...
i hope this all helps you make up your mind....

tell ya what guys, it was hard to get used to, but i started driving like an old lady and my MPG went up about 30%..... easy on the gas from lights, coast as much as possible.... anticipate traffic stopping ahead and slowing down instead of stopping behind them..... neutral down all hills.... never going over 2500 RPM, unless i have to...... keeping it under 65 on the highway.... keep tire pressure correct.
i know it hard to do but it pays off and if i can do it, so can you. if you remember old threads of mine, i used to race around all the time, but now it really hurts the wallet, so something had to give. i long for the good old days of my youth when gas was $.87 a gallon.
im running a K+N in the stock boxand thats it.

Same here, K&N in the stock box, new wires, plugs, 0W-30 Mobil1, a glasspack, 34 psi in the front tires and 30 in the rear. Driving just how you described, I have seen 42 mpg from time to time.
Building a small HHO generator as well, seeing if that helps any.

so if im right, modding your exhaust is only going to get you less mpg? right? and somedays i wish i would have just left my stock airbox on there, but other days im happy i did it. i would think that your stock airbox is going to help you get more mpg, with a k+n filter. so basically our cars were designed to get the best possible mpg, and by modding them you are slowly making your mpg go downhill. my suggestions- put a k+n filter on it, leave the stock airbox, and just make sure you check your psi. running a full synthetic fuel will help your engine last longer.
Couldnt tell ya, I put a different exhaust on my car and a K&N after my car had only 200 miles on it... I can tell you from swapping things around that putting the glasspack on my car seemed to net an extra mpg or so compared to the flowmaster. And I can tell you that I have had excellent luck with K&N filters in every car I have put them in... with "light" mods like these, they do seem to help a little bit, assuming you drive like a granny... but if you step on it with these mods, they will hurt you compared to stock.
BTW my airbox has an extra intake port cut in it... in the bottom where the water "bypass hole" used to be. And I havent tried that fully synthetic fuel yet lol... but yes, except for the oil that was in it when it was new, my engine has always seen full synthetic of one brand or another... Royal Purple, Mobil1, and Pennzoil Platinum. I would recommend the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 or Mobil1 5W-30 or 0W-30 (they now sell the 0W-30 at Walmart in the 5-qt jug with the green cap, it's thinner at startup than 5W-30but alsoSLIGHTLY more stable/thicker at 200 degrees than the 5W-30 believe it or not)I recommendRoyal Purple last, but thats just me... I also would recommend Redline or AMSOil, but I havent tried either of those in a Neon, had good luck with them in other vehicles though.

ive been looking into a HHO gen too. i have 2 neons and im gonna try it on the older one. the only problem is figuring out all the electronics and im not good with that stuff. keep me updated on your progress.
I'm making the rest of it tomorrow... you hear a lot of arguments both ways about the HHO generators but the bottom line is, the geeks who never tried one all say "it's fluid dynamics and it's impossible to get more power out of something without using power to do it so it won't work"... well that's true but they all neglect the fact that the engine is ALREADY RUNNING on gas regardless of whether or not the HHO generator is on or not... they neglect the fact that its not the Hydrogen or Oxygen mix thats powering the engine... its the fact that the gases are helping the fuel combust much better (normal air that we breathe is only 20% oxygen anyway, most of the air around us is Nitrogen, which is inert and under normal conditions cannot burn, period).
ANYWAY, I'm putting the coil for it together tomorrow, and possibly if I get far enough I'll hook it up too and see what happens. I'm not running mine off the ignition though like other people, just going to toggle-switch mine and see what happens... I just have to remember to shut it off before I turn the engine off LOL... I'll post pics and results on here when Im done to see if its worth it and how much it really gains...
