I too have seen/heard that spark knock is the cause.

-The only "bad" ticking mine does is when it's pretty cold out and just started. Sometimes I can hear a light ticking going on, but only about as loud as the injectors pulsing.

I run amsoil. Have a dealer here in Red Deer and I can do a full oil change with filter for about $40.

Oh, and my car never came with a manual...used, aka prev owner was unorganized and lost it or threw it on the floor and got it muddy.

Oh and 15 or 5 w30 I'm cannot remember whatever is stated in the Haynes manual.

Yea mine stopped when I went from Mobil 1 to AMSOIL. (both 5w-20) I am very happy to say it has gone away. I only drive this car on the weekends and never heard the tick again.

5w20 eh? I have to check what I really put in mine...might consider changing to that.
