'04 Neon Problems
Hello everyone! I have a 2004 Neon and it started having problems a couple of days ago. The check engine light came on and would not go off when I cut the car off and started it up again. So I decided to try to get it back to the house from where I was. It was about 15 miles tops.......anyways it started jerking while I was on the highway and hit about 60. So I backed off and it did ok until I got in stop and go traffic. Every time starting off from a stop light I would have to ease on the gas other wise it would just jerk and once it got up to about 35 it would start jerking again. It didn't overheat and it wasn't smoking or anything else.....just the light and the jerking. All I've been able to find online in regards to this is anything from a simple Fuel filter to the transmission. I was more or less just wondering what would cause it to do this? And would it be something that I could easily fix or a costly repair?
Do the Dodge Key dance. Insert the key and turn it to on then back to off quickly three times. When you turn it back to on the next time, watch the Check Engine light. It will blink. There will be a series of blinks pauses and blinks. Each time it pauses, the number of blinks before the pause is one digit of a two digit error code.
Blink Blink pause blink blink is error code 22. There may be multiple error codes, so be ready. Error codes 12 and 55 can be ignored completely and you won't have error code 12 unless you have disconnected the battery within the last 50 key on/off cycles.
Since the car will run, immediately go to an Autozone, Advance, OReilly, NAPA, etc. parts store and get them to give you a free ODB-II read on your error codes. Write them down.
These error codes can be looked up on either the 2nd Generation Neon forum, or unless 2nd Gen specific, this forum. Come back and give us the error codes so we can be of more help.

BTW, and just so you know. The Dodge key dance error code check is not a one time thing. If you think you got it wrong, or missed one, or whatever, just turn the switch off, do the 3 times on/off dance, and watch the codes repeat themselves. Do it several times if you need to to get all the error codes.
The actual error codes will not go away until you either fix the problem and reset the computer, or just reset the computer, but for heavens sake don't do that until you get the codes and don't let the guy at the parts store do it either.
Sounds like you crankshaft or camshaft position sensors are getting wonky, or you are having misfires, but that is what the error codes are for.

Wow. That is WAY nicer in that you won't even need to go to Autozone to get the detailed error codes!
I guess Dodge decided to give 2nd gen'ers more information then was possible for 1st gen'ers.
Nice. Good to know. WAY better then counting blinks......

Thanks guys! I didn't know Autozone even had something like that! I took it up there and it turns out it is the Camshaft sensor. It doesn't look like it's going to be to hard to replace. Thanks for the info!
Or you could just spend 20 bucks on a repair manual that has the codes in it... and honestly if you work on your car yourself you should have the manual anyway...

2004 Dodge Neon - Recent History: check engine light on paired with car shaking when going over 55mph, gears sticking - three OBD codes : P0498, P0499, P0--- : replaced camshaft sensor > no more shaking, gears shifting smoothly, two latter OBD codes gone. The following week, oil leak and persistent P0498 = NVLD canister vent valve solenoid circuit low. Cannot find source of leak. Took to a mechanic, said it is the head gasket. Found that the mechanic was lying about 3 other supposed repairs the car "needs" - along with the supposed cost of parts. Another mechanic looked at it - said it doesn't need a head gasket repair - seeing that there is no water or antifreeze coming out of the tail pipe (we did not do any pressurized tests however). Oil leak - replaced the oil pressure sending unit - thinking this was a possible leak source. Leak persists and a p0522 (oil pressure sensor low) is added along with p0498 (NVLD canister vent valve solenoid circuit high - CONtradiction of other code). Also - when looking at engine from below while someone was running through the gears, my engine SHIFTS (moves/tilts) as it goes from P to N to D. Any insights?
