The only thing I am going off here is the seat of my pants and lots of autoX experience but heres the deal. A lot of guys (and gals) that race neons feel the need to remove the rear muffler section when they go out and run it. I myself fell into this trap because it is really hard not to notice a neon without a muffler and I figured if everyone else was doing it, why shouldn't I, I'm always looking for that extra trick or edge or to be at least equal with my competitors. I can testify that it completly sucks the life out of your engine, at least mine which is the 2.0L sohc magnum - although you may feel like its faster because you are making alot of noise, you really arent. My car has 2.125 id pipe back to the muffler and then exits through two smaller sections. The bottom line is if you put 2.25 id pipe with no muffler on your 2.0L sohc with a 132 hp cam still in there and stock ecm - you are gonna be hurting way more than the 2.0L magnum does (which has a more aggressive cam and spark map not to mention the two stage intake manifold and 4 to 1 header). Turbo engines rely on high flow and low backpressure to keep the turbo spooled and ready to rock - not to mention the fact that the turbine impeller provides a pressure drop itself. Think about it this way - pressure is extremely high in the cylinder when the exhaust valve opens and eventually this pressure has to drop to atmospheric pressure at the exhaust outlet - the concept of backpressure is an additional pressure drop which "slows" the exhaust gas down. Exhaust flows in pulses and air has inertia - the idea is to get the old pulse to help the next one on its way out and your limiting factor in all this is the cam. You tune exhausts - header lengths and diameters - to the camshaft to optimize for one and only one rpm - unless you have variable valve timing. Cams are stupid - after they are ground there is no more to it - nothing can be optimized. If you really want a good exhaust system get a supertrapp muffer or just the plate stack and take your car to a place that has a chassis dyno. By changing the number of plates you can tune this pressure drop to get the right amount of back pressure where your cam needs it. This would of course show up on the dyno printout as the setup which would provide the best torque curve. The thing is - dodge engineers are not stupid - they just have cost, manufacturing, and emissions constraints to deal with which makes most exhaust systems a compromise to say the least. Keep this in mind and remember if you change one thing - such as a ecm, intake, header, cam, compression ratio, or a combination - your exhaust will feel the effects and most likely will not be as good as it could. Good luck.

Got rid of my r/t for 150 shipped and got my srt exhaust for 115 shipped had it on for 4 months with no problem the cops really dont care about my exhaust and a whole lot cooler for sound than the ricers actually alot louder it tunes them out. Sounds like I have a turbo what Ive been told by alot of srt guys and others. Not at all bad like you all put it out to be not ricey what so ever. Havent lost any back pressure at all I have some engine mods that helps.

Ive decided im gettin a srt exhaust just heard a sound clip from a guy that has a sxt with a srt exhaust on and it sounds very cool louder than the ricer cans. He said he got 5 more hp he said a bit quicker since the exhaust is free flowing and the engine runs better. Doesnt sound ricey to me at all. Im gettin me the srt spoiler also this week. When i get everything installed will take pics and sound clips.
is it possible for me to hear this clip... or do you know where i could get one?!?

that would be great

How is that possible? The muffler and cat creates 90% of the back pressure, you don't have a muffler. What mods do you have that help with back pressure? A turbo? A bananna in one tailpipe?

When there's a HUGE drop in back pressure such as the SRT exhaust, there is almost no scavenging going on. Exhaust scavenging is the pulses from old strokes pulling new pulses from new strokes that mechengineer201 is talking about. I think I agree with him on this post. Not only will HP be effected in a negetive way, but gas milage, engine life and any performance aspect of the car will be adversely effected. The tone will likely be loud and stupid anyway because of the higher pressure in front of the catalytic converter and the absance of pressure after it. If you're going for a sound similar to a dirtbike, go for the SRT exhaust on your NA Neon. I don't like the SRT sound period i can imagine the sound on neon. Ricey is a compliment for the way that's gotta sound. If ya want, I'll give ya the system from my YZ450F, it'll probably sound similar.

I have the srt exhaust on my sxt for 5 months now with no problems whatsoever. Lost no pressure and gas mileage is great. Again not as loud as most think . I like it and one of the coolest things Ive done to my sxt.

how about the R/T exhaust... it is dual and i guess that you could just get a better muffler, while retaining the dual look!

any info?!?

I had the r/t before the srt and the r/t is cool lookin but get more out of the srt than the r/t.

how do you know you have lost no pressure? have you tested it? your not gonna notice gain or lost just by changing exhaust, its like a 2-3 hp difference...
