Default 00 Neon backfiring at 60mph

Recently I had a camshaft position sensor replaced on my neon (97k miles) because it was jumping around 35 m/h. About a week later it started jumping again at 60, and now its starting at 55. Any ideas?

Worn out spark plug wires or spark plugs, to start. Those are probably the two most common issues of general performance problems.

yep what darth said......... also check in the spark plug holes for oil.. these seals are easy to go bad and let oil seep in.. Just an idea

My husband and I have replace both of these with new parts. We have also had the valve cover gasket replaced as well. None of these repairs have fixed the problem and when he changed the spark plugs again today there was fresh oil in the tubes mixed with a wierd metallic color. ANy more ideas?

If there is oil in the spark plug tubes, either the tubes need to be tapped in a bit more, or the seals are bad and need to be replaced.

Default Getting Aggrivated

Ok, so, I'm really quite tired of this car right now. I've been to many different repair shops and everyone seems to give me the run around. I had the engine light pop on and it had said it was 'intermitance of camshaft or crankshaft sensor' I had taken it to a shop and they had told me it could be a number of things (fun stuff) to make a long story short, I went to Meineke and they tested it, gave me a paper that said "PCM-Reprogramming for driveability problems" and told me I had to go to a dealer to get it done. Now I am from MD and moved to FL in May of 10 and the sheet said symptoms were high altitude hesitation...FL is almost sea level, so I feel that I am getting another run around. Please if anyone has any more ideas or knows any reliable shops in FL I would love and greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.

The camshaft sensor was replaced 5 months ago, and I don't believe it's the crankshaft sensor because the car has no problem starting up, it's just once I hit the 55-60 mph. I believe it's either something with the camshaft sensor or someone had suggested the timing belt could be slipping? If it helps, it does the jumping more often during the day time in the heat. At night it rarely ever jumps. I'm not sure if that would be a clue as to whether it was the sensor or the belt.

The timing belt is a possible cause. What were the CEL codes you got?
