Default Gas smell -- help me identify this part

Yesterday my '05 Neon (~97,000 miles) started having a gas smell. It was NOT after having filled it up. MY tank was about 1/2 full when I noticed it. Opened hood and smell is stronger there. I followed fuel line and noticed that this part was greasy and wet. When I touched it, there was fuel on it. Cleaned it off and it would eventually get wet again. Any idea what this part is? Also how does the connector to the left of it work? This line comes from under the car, past this valve(?) and directly to the injectors.

Also, how can I remove the pressure on the fuel line so I can remove the part?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian, I just bought a Neon today and have the same problem. Were you able to figure out what was leaking and how to repair it?

Yes. It is part number 5278866-AC Tub Fuel 14089004. Cost me $44 at the dealer.

To replace it, you just push in the plastic tabs that are visible to the left of the circle and and the other end. The entire line then just pulls off. I don't know if it is the o-rings or the part circled that is leaking, but it did fix it.

Before removing the part, make sure you have depressurized the fuel line so you don't spray more around. My was leaking so bad, I didn't have any pressure to release.

Hope that helps.

Did that cause the engine light to come on? Because my EVAP has been on and off forever.

no, my engine light wasn't on.

Had to call around a few dealers to get one. They were all telling me it was on "national backorder". "national backorder" scares me almost as much as "permament record"

I couldn't find a way to depressure it, so I just slowly disconnected it. Wasn't really any pressure on it, but there was fuel in the line that ran out all over.

you take pressure of your fuel lines at the end of the fuel rail on the injectors, thres a cap that you screw off, and it has a valve in it, like a tire. push the valve and that takes the pressure off.
