Top End Noise and Mis Fire
Ok, My Dad ran something over, took out the oil pan, he spun a bearing on the #4 rod, I replaced all of the bearings and bolts and that noise went away.
I still have a horrible tapping noise coming from the head on cyl4 and I have mis fires on that cylinder as well.
it sounds like the cam is smacking a dead lifter. I can't see that causing a misfire though, unless it is more than one valve, it is a 4 valve per cylinder head so I figure two would have to be down in order to mis.
When I turned the engine manually after installing the bearings, it is smooth with no noise.
I have to take the valve cover off tonight and see what is going on.
Does anyone have an idea on where I should start looking? Are lifters known to F up like this or is there something else I should focus on?
I have no problems fixing this engine since I know it has very low miles and was babied for all of them.
04 SXT 2.0L non turbo.
thanks in advance for your help!

address the missfire first as the dead cylinder with no pressure on the piston head can slap around on the wrist pin and will sound like a diesel tractor. (pistons and wrist pins are ****e on these 2.0L engines)
once you address the miss (no fuel, no spark, or no comp) then go after the noise if it still exists.
might not be a bad lifter but perhaps a worn out lobe? If thats the case I'd readjust your thinking that this engine has been babied.

nah, my dad is 75 and drive 40mph on the highway. I know for a fact that he changes the oil every 2500-3000. He is the most **** person I know. He babies the car day in day out.
The problems started when the engine ran dry of oil after taking out the oil pan.
I will pick up my compression tester on my way home, I know it isn't a spare or fuel issue, it ran perfectly fine up till this incident.
I was thinking a bent valve or the valves aren't opening, but who knows at this point?
I understand what you are saying about the piston having room to shift around, when I put the bearings on, it did appear to have some play, so I'll do a compression test and go from there.
Clearly I see myself removing the head tonight......
edit: that is exactly what it sounds like too, a diesel tractor!

how many states did he drive to get home after the red oil light came on? lol
have you had the valve cover off yet? may not need to go as far as pulling the head

haha, he hit it and I guess the hole in the pan was small, the oil light didn't come on for a few miles. He turned it off and pulled over.
Being his age, I am wondeirng how long the light was on before he noticed!
I am betting that I have no compression in Cyl#4. The valves are either stuck open, or stuck closed or something to that effect.
I once saw a honda as to where the camshaft snapped, so only 2 of the cylinders were getting any action, the other 2 were dead.
A cam is an easy fix for this car, so that is more than likely NOT the problem!
nah man I'm guessing it wont be anything too difficult
if ur doing rod bearings you'll have no trouble.
these are even more basic than those "hondas" I'll bet starving a VTEC motor would cause more damge than you'll find on this

It's all good, I've built several motors in my life, I have no problem with doing the work.
My dad does a lot of favors for a lot of people, he'll have a running car when I'm done with it one way or the other.
I'll know more tonight. I know the rod knock is gone, the crank was perfect, but the bearing had a burn on it.
Thanks for your help though, very much appreciated.

probably more like "fixes"
The top end seems to be real clean, don't see too much going on.
Only Cyl#4 is a problem, so we'll see.
I'll do a compression test first, leak down test and go from there.
If it is a bent valve, I'll have to pull the head, bad lifter or cam, the head can stay on.
I figured it would have just seized up and been done.
