Went to a mechanic today to see why my 2000 neon's brakes squeak. I thought it was the pads and was ready to get them changed but he said the pads still had life left. He said that the rotors were crystallized. What does it mean when they are crystallized and can that cause them to be squeaking? He said if he changed the pads, if wouldnt make much of a difference, that i would still hear the noise. He quoted me 180 parts and labor and 1 year warranty. Thanks

Crystallized rotors? That's a new one. The rusting has nothing to do with the squeaking IMO. Perhaps said mechanic meant the rotors were glazed? That's from overheating. If that's the case, they'd need to be turned. My front rotors are screwed at this point, so I'm just living with the squeak until I need new pads. Though, it doesn't squeak all the time.

 

Well he clearly said crystallized. dont know whether i should just change them or get a second opinion somewhere else.

Ask the guy if he meant glazed. If it's shiny like that then I'm betting they're glazed in which case you can get them turned like Darth said or just replace them.

Also, does the fact that they are glazed cause them to make noise?

Put a micrometer on them if they are with in specs turn them,

 

It can be a combination of the glazed rotor and/or the pads causing the noise. It could also be the little anti-squeal clips.

 

I was told i still had brake pad life so that would leave the rotors. i plan on changing them as well as the pads..
