Default So what is this special tool L-4553

that is to remove the auto transaxle filter bolts? Is it a torx or metric allen wrench? Can anyone say what type of fasteners hold the strainer/filter to the valve body?

Also, is there an O ring or gasket between the strainer and valve body?

The car is a 2002 Neon with SOHC 2.0L 4 cylinder, probably most common power plant.

Thanks, Slim

Oh, I think the special tool recommendation to remove the auto transmission filter bolts is for the 31TH 3 speed automatic. My girlfriend's car is an 02, with the 4 speed, which seems to not have any bolts retaining the transmisison fluid filter. Has anyone had the pan off of same automatic transaxle, if so how is the filter retained?

Thanks.

The filter just pops off. It's held up by the pan and o-ring. The o-ring pops into the valve body.

Not that I am personally aware of. Haven't worked on a 3 speed, but it's unlikely. There's all sorts of special tools that simply cost 3x as much as the same "normal" tool.

A regular 1 1/16" deep socket works too. Again, the "special" regular tools.

FSM states special tool L-4553 to remove the two bolts that retain the filter on a 3 speed, it's probably a torx driver. If you take off the pan, let us know what type the bolts are.

No, sorry to say I do not know. I hoped that if TejasMtnBiker removed pan fr his 3 speed, he could inform the rest of us.
