this is about as vague as saying "my car rattles. what do i do?"

i dont know what whinning or whirring means, but where do you think the noise is appearing to come from? the engine? tires? tranny?

55mph rpms are decently high can be from un-even wear on tires, alternator, stereo picking up noise, and even the flow of air going through the vents from outside.. Possibility your alternator bearings could be going out and it will make an odd whine at high rpms.

Is this a std or auto trans? My automatic has a whine going up hill when it's super cold out or extremely hot like 115 degrees in summer. But all checks out ok, normal for a 13 year old high miles ride....

any more details on your noise?

I took the ps pump belt off and ran the car at idle. noise was still there. Then took off Alt. belt off and noise was gone. It's not the pulley bearings its the internals of the Alt. It still charges fine tho. I got a used Alt. for $62 wth a warranty. I'll be installing that soon. Thanks guys

Bearing kits are cheap, good quality bearings don't make any noise and it makes HUGE difference.... Seems like from the factory they only use Vaseline for lube to save a few bucks lol

A used alt can be the same, esp if it was outside in the damp air siting for a long time

It's easy to take apart, put the new bearings in the freezer before installing, an put the alt housing in the oven or infront of a heater and warm it up good before assembling that way you don't need a press or a hammer etc

I have the same problem with my 2002 neon. When im going 55-70mph it makes a rattling or scratching noise. It sounds like somethings getting caught in a fan casuing it ro vibrate and make the noise. As soon as i get passed 65-70mph it stops. I haven't found a soulution yet. But your not alone

I know this is crazy can you put the front end up on jack stands and get it to that mph and see where its coming from? (Don't try it if you cannot do it safely on 2 ton stands, not the small junker ones) exhaust pipe shielding, cat shield, motor mounts broken metal to metal contact, a/c pump loose on the bracket. I had a noise @ 80mph on the highway only and the fuel tank when 98% empty was where it came from.... lol drove me up a wall
