Story: I had to drop tranny pan, & tranny valve(because I had pushed the small "D" linkage shaft into the bearing..
and needed to push it back up from inside the tranny)
So... Got everything back together, dumped 4 qts of fluid in, started it up & discovered that: I had NO gears...
Meaning, I ran through each gear, and nothing happened...
My assumption is , I put something back together incorrectly...but I cannot see what..
I made a video of the underside of the tranny, showing the gear selector moving etc whilst my assistant shifts gears.
I am hoping someone might see something amiss, or have an idea as to what I could have done, that would disable
every..single...gear!
:O
Thanks for any help & advice,
Rich
I see you don't have any replies yet, so I'll see if I can get things started.
Scan the ECM for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
Have you checked for line pressure?
Did you have any gear engagement Before the repair?
Some initial thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
Howdy, & thanks much for the reply..
I haven;t been able to get back on it since I posted, but I should be back under it tomorrow..
Scan the ECM for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot. - I'll definitely keep that in mind
Have you checked for line pressure? - NO
Did you have any gear engagement Before the repair? - YES, all gears worked, just the shifting out of 1st issue
Ok good feedback. So lets think about this some more.
Seeing as how you said you "dumped 4qts in" but didn't say how much you got out on the pan drop, or if you've checked fluid level after refilling, have you checked to make sure the pan isn't Overfilled? If it is, remove some with a hand pump with a length of syphon tubing attached & fed down the dipstick tubing, that's Longer than the dipstick, so if it comes loose it won't fall into the pan. Then pump out enough to get the Cold fluid level within the Cold fluid dipstick mark. If too much fluid is in the tranny pan, the pool level can make contact with moving parts that its not supposed to touch & thus can whip the fluid into a froth & the tranny pump doesn't like trying to pressurize fluid with air in it.
If fluid level & line pressure are ok & you remembered to re-install the filter before bolting the pan back on, have a look atop the forum index page to review the FSM link Darthroush has in Red, at the bottom of his posts, for your year/model tranny, to make sure you got All the linkages back together & adjusted correctly & the bands adjusted right.
More thoughts for consideration, let us know how it goes.
I'm thinking it's got to be something like linkage/something not put back together properly..
As part of all this, I dropped the valve(twice!), so I've drained probably more than 4 qts(and consequently, I'll need to buy more...)
So, Tomorrow, I'll review what things should look like & see what stands out to me.
Question: when you install the park rod back in, is it supposed to have any kind of 'bearing' sleeve...thing to keep it solid?
I ask, because the end of it, opposite the "E" ring, kinda..floats around...
You did check the tranny shifting & linkage Before re-installing the pan, to make sure all the in cabin shifter points were still in the same place....Right???
We're talking about a 31TH auto tranny, right?? -- It's auto, & the VIN is a "C" VIN...(8th character)
I think 31TH sounds right...?
You did check the tranny shifting & linkage Before re-installing the pan, to make sure all the in cabin shifter points were still in the same place....Right??? --well, what I did(and I may have really messed up here...) I had my helper make sure shifter was in park, I made sure shift linkage was in fully counter-clockwise
position: (the circled portion below)
Hooked up linkages, and had helper run shifter through all gears, as I watched linkage..
But I'm thinking just because that linkage "looks right", doesn't mean what's going on below is correct...
btw, in the video, when I say, "put it in 1", I notice the little metal tang/tab thing... moves out past the shaft it's engaging with.
Is that a problem?

Right now I don't rightly know as I'm having trouble remembering what things looked like in there, as I've only been into it once. Maybe a member reading this that does know will chime in & enlighten us, while I'm trying to remember what things looked like about 3 years ago when I had the valve body out to replace the TCC solenoid that's attached Externally. I didn't have to open the valve body up, so I'm no help there.
