Well one thing is an automatic tranny takes more power away from crank HP to what you have at the wheels. For example the average amount of power lost on a manual tranny from crank to wheels is anywhere from 10%-20%, while on a auto tranny it could be as high as 35% loss.

I can tell you right now that you've probably got the hardest road to travel right now as far as a Neon goes. I'm not saying that it's a lost cause because there are many things you can do without spending lots of money. You've got the 4 speed ATX, which isn't as good as the 3 speed ATX. Also, there is no after-market PCM that you can use for the '03-'05 Neon (yet). There are Jet Performance chips which are basically piggy-back systems, and from what I hear they do no good. You can still go through with the valve body, the shift kit and the clutch kit; you just won't get as much out of it as you would with an '02 MTX. The point of any car is to drive it and have fun with it.

Alternatively, you could swap out the motor for an SRT-4 2.4 Litre motor. Those are MTX by default and have way more to work with than the base Neon.

Best of luck with your Neon, it's looking good as it is, keep it up.

im a big fan of stick now, i did have an automatic neon but it was gay cuz its slower and not as much fun. for god sakes u cant even spin the tires on an auto. it doesnt take much skill to drive an auto, i also got made fun of for having an automatic neon, just my 2 cents.

Go with an automatic shift kit w/ b&m high performance tranny fluid, costs like 100-200 bucks all together. It slams the gears and then you can buy a shift improvement chip. they make your automatic just as effective as the manual then.
