Is it common for the Dodge neons brakes to squeak? If so what can I do to make them stop?

 

How many miles are on the brakes, are they OEM pads/rotors?

 

I have a 04 and there are 20,000 miles. They are stoke brakes ive never changes them

 

It could be that you need to change the brake pads...i know my brakes began to squeak when they needed replaced (along with the rotors), which was at 30k...but some Neon's have been known to need the OEM pads replaced as early as 14k, and as late as 45k.

So if you can, try and see how much is left on the pads by removing either front wheels, and loooking at the thickness of the brake pad. Another indication that your brakes need changed is increased brake pedal travel and obviously poor braking...

what if ive already changed my breaks but they squeek? could it be that it needs break fluid?

 

The rear brakes on my Neon always squeak when they're wet, no matter what. Always have, straight from the dealership, and the dealership say it's normal. It's a 2001 Neon by the way, I think they were working on correcting it for later models.

 

The brake fluid is in a closed system, so theoretically, you shouldnt have to add brake fluid...with that said, it is an easy process to bleed the lines and add new, fresh fluid if your car has a lot of mileage...i doubt that would cause your brakes to squeak, but its something to think about. You could try using the brake system cleaner spray they sell at auto stores, I've never tried it personally since mine only squeak when they need changed, but ohter people have used it succesfully.

 

Heh. My '05 let's off a squeak every once in awhile. There hasn't been rain for a month now,
and I'm on 10600 miles.

I'm planning on getting some aftermarket brakes pretty soon (When I can afford it, I just blew $1200 on 17" black Enkei RSV's with Yokohama's! w00t).
The sound is just embarrassing, and I've heard bad things about the neon's stock brakes.

EDIT: I have heard a few things from members on a few other Neon forums.
They said removing the brakes on the rear drums and giving them a good cleaning can fix the problem.
I might have to give that a try for now.

 

I get the morning sqeaks mainly from the rear Drums at least until they are warm. Afte the first few stops they are quiet. If they squeak all the time then may need pad or shoes. Check your rotors and drums for proper size before turning or just replace them with the pads and shoes. Remember to clean and lube slide points with a product such as Syl-Glide and all should be good. Cleaning and adjusting rears at each oil change would be beneficial as well.

Mine are original at 36,350 miles and counting.
