Can't help you with the first question, but the second, well, when you turn the selector **** to defrost, turn the fan **** to regular fan instead of A/C. Voila!

Negative. If you have the temp part on cold it will still engage the a/c even if you don't have the **** turned to a/c. I don't know the answer to either question.

No on mine there is a definite difference if I switch it between fan and A/C when it's set to cold.

I don't think it has anything to do with where the fan is set or the temp selector is set. Defrost settings always uses the compressor to remove moisture from the air being directed to the windshield. I would guess "bscabl" wants to avoid the compressor (ie mileage/horsepower loss) and rely on heated air to do the job. I'd like that option as well although I'm learning that the compressor does little to effect your mileage. That said I hate what it does to acceleration.

Well, I'll take your word that the compressor kicks on in defrost, I'd never noticed. If you really wanted to get rid of that, there's probably some sort of switch in behind the HVAC controls. Some time and trial and error and you should be able to figure out how to get it not to kick the compressor on.

If you do this use caution. I'd add a switch or something so you can turn the compressor on if you want it. It can get dicy when you are driving town the road and the window starts to fog over. Especially if you were just workingout or you have a nice steamy cup of coffee and it's real soupy out. Good luck.

you can reach down in the engine compartment to the a/c compressor and just unplug it...there should be 2 clips ontop...im not sure which one to unplug, so try one and then the other....i did this on my durango because i was tired of hearing the compressor cycle every 30 seconds when the truck is idleing
