I have a similar problem and it's my lifters (one noisey one in particular)... mine is louder than hell when it's cold (until it goes below -10 then it's not so bad ha ha) but it goes away eventually after the engine is warm or has been revved up... this seems to be a common problem with the 2.0's

I have heard that supposedly the lifters in the Neon are slightly flawed, and prone to failure especially at higher RPM's (apparently they can't take the heat), and a lot of guys "solve" this problem by swapping them out with a set of lifters out of a 2.0-liter from a PT Cruiser (because supposedly the lifters in the PT hold up a lot better than the style in the Neon).

But in the meantime I'd say just change your oil with some good 0W-30 or 5W-30 synthetic to prolong it from getting worse.

Yes it will... the dealer will charge you a $100 lifetime deductable when you take it in to fix it, and they will haggle with you and want you to show all the receipts, types, and dates off all of the oil changes in detail since you bought the car... not to mention that they may try to just say "that's a normal sound," to you anyway (which for a lot of these motors, it is a usual sound). Hopefully they're not super-dicks to you.

Well let us know how it works out then. You're definitely not the only guy in here with lifter noises, so if they fix it for ya make sure they document it and share it with us so we can all make our dealerships do the same lol [sm=bling.gif]

You won't believe this. Today it warmed up slightly and the piston slap went away. It's like it knew I was going to take it to be looked at. But I still get the clicks from the lifters or fuel injectors. Still not sure what it's from. and not sure if i should take it to be looked at because they'll probably say it's a normal noise.
