According to this test, it's not that great:

I run Amsoil 0W30. Have driven a lot on this motor oil and it still looks as good as the day it went in. Works fine in triple digit temps to 30 degree mornings here in So Cal. Never had an issue with it. I have used many brands of oil over the years and, Amsoil, works the best in my truck.

That test was conducted by an outside lab- not Amsoil. The graph was found on the Amsoil site. If it was conducted by an outside lab, there may be a way of obtaining the actual report upon request. I will call them and see about obtaining the report today.

I just spoke to them about obtaining a test report. All test reports are confidential and are not for public dissemination. Sorry I could not provide more detail on this. The only thing that they told me was the M1 is aware and is not disputing the results as they also use the same labs to have this testing done on their motor oil.

Not to dig on 95ram360, but the same thing happened with him. He's talked about why mobil 1 is so great...of course that was according to a class he said he took about mobil1. I wouldn't doubt that it was sponsored by them.

im not dissing you or anything, but my question would be, why are they testing 0w30 amsoil, and not 5w30 as they did all the others? something there looks fishy to me. and ive heard that castrol causes quite a bit of sludge. though i cant prove this, nor do i have any evidence to support this, but ill stick with a full syn oil, and change the oil every 3000 miles.

thanks for that good bit of info though.

The reason they tested this particular motor oil is because it's their flagship motor oil. So, they compared their best against other flagship oils made by other companies. If you note the temp of the test it's around 150º C.

Everyone assumes that it's a winter oil and, that at higher temps, it fails to protect the engine as well as a higher winter rating which, is why they intentionally chose this low rated oil as it shows that even at high temps of 150ºC (not F) this oil does not break down and provides much better protection than a higher rated winter oil.

So, if you look at the graph and all the parameters more closely, there's nothing fishy going on here. There's also another 0W rated oil in that test as well so, it's not all 5W across the board. This was intentionally done to prove a point of how their lowest winter grade motor oil shows the least amounts of wear in an industry standard test against higher winter rated, top brand motor oils as well as Castrol's top rated 0W oil.

Like I stated before, I have never seen motor oil look new after driving on it for a while. The only question I don't understand is why they don't make it more available in stores so everyone can buy it.

I like that Pennzoil Platinum came in second to the Amsoil. Good oil at a great price.

i found a similar chart, but it puts mobil up higher on the chart.

what would be the best protection as far as weight goes for year round use in fl? 10w40? im thinking about ordering 5 quarts of amsoil soon.

Well, that test was done 2 years before the later. Oil formulations can change in that time.
