Also, how hot should the trans. cooler return hose be? Mine is hot but not so hot I can't touch it, just can't hold my hand there for any real length of time.
About 116 for mine at idle, about 80 degrees ambient. The truck was not driven before these temps where taken so they may be low.
My buddy gave me his trailer wiring harness off his 99 1500. Got it installed and the reverse lights are still coming on with the brake lights. Hmmm...
^check all the grounds RR. Sounds like you are missing one - had the same thing happen.
There is only one ground that I disconnected.... well 2 actually. The I ne that goes to the trailer harness (which has no effect on anything but the trailer side) and then the bed to cab ground. Its all tight and grounded properly
Any other sections to check?
All fuses that deal with that stuff are good. So im at a loss.
Sounds like a shorted bulb socket. Are they all in good shape? With someone holding the brake pull out one bulb at a time and see if the reverse lights go off.

The sockets are in good shape so far as I know.
How would I go about replacing the socket? Just splicing in a new one?
