My grand folks loaded up the family in a model T and went to Yellowstone from Sabula Iowa, in the day. Somewhere one of the aunts or uncles has a photo album of the family and car in various states, in front of various landmarks and such.
One picture has Mt. Rushmore in the back ground. I don't think there were any federal highways back then and little in the way of paved roads.
There are a lot of pictures of the Ford stuck in deep mud. A few of the pictures show various draft animals pulling it out to more solid ground.
I will ask around and see who has the photo album and see about scanning some of the pictures.

Not so many years ago I owned a '92 Pontiac Grand Am. It was the 'hot to have' teal green color with the color matched factory mags and had almost every trick whistle and bell available at the time except for a sunroof.
We bought it off a GM program vehicle deal. Someone had leased it for a year or so and when they hit 50,000it was sold with full warranty and stuff. We paid a shade under 8K for a 21K buggy.
Anyway the thing is we owned this juggernaut until 2008. Through its life it had some minor things go wrong with it, nothing major, until after the extended warranty ran out, of course.
One of the things was the brake line onthe drivers side rear got rusty and leaked. It had one of those special curly bits of tubing on it. When I replaced it I use a more straight forward design of my own that did not have the curly feature.
It did not last long. I guess the hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid would cause the tubing to flex a lot more than I thought it should because every few days the line would be broken again. Finally I bought a new longer piece of tubing and did my best to duplicate the original curl,... that lasted until I boned the car.
