The 12v diesels have the better injection pump. (p pump) the newer ones are lubricated by the fuel flowing thru them, so, no fuel means no lubrication, and the pump fails. **** poor design if you ask me....

I've heard the 97 and older Cummins trucks have better injection pumps, is that right? Or is it the lift pump?
it can. vp44's are sensitive to fuel pressure which is why most 2nd gen 24v owners have fuel pressure gauges and aftermarket lift pumps (if you look at my sig, you will notice I have a fuel pressure gauge, and an airdog150 fuel system)

the truck pictured originally came with a vp44, but he converted it to a p7100 (pump from the 94-98 cummins 12v trucks) p7100 is a better built pump thats far less sensitive to fuel pressure, and capable of flowing higher volumes of fuel than a vp44.

What does it take to convert to a P7100? Just a simple swap or is there whole bunch of crap to replace in the process?

Go to the cumminsforum.com. There are writups on the swap, and everything else imaginable. To answer the question though, it's not a simple procedure, it requires a lot of dissembly and parts from a 12v motor.

Just the other day http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/11165790/

Sometimes people on bikes are real d-bags while on the road but there's no call for putting them in danger because you're in a hurry. Smogging them out is fine but getting close enough to clip them is just wrong.
That would be like getting stuck behind some little old lady at the grocery store and kicking her in the back of the knee then hopping over her after she went down because she was moving too slow for you.

You need to pull the injection pump, open up the timing cover and change timing gears, and a few other parts, get custom fuel lines and cross over tubes that connect injection lines to injectors to do the swap. There are actually companies that sell kits now to do the conversion..costs about $3k to convert a motor to P7100 but a lot of guys think its worth it. I'm fine with my vp44 and if it ever fails, I'll replace it with another SOVP44. vp44 can be replaced for around $1k sometimes less.
