Has that been confirmed? That would certainly cause a problem?

The West volunteer fire department was originally on the scene to handle a smallish fire on at the plant. Everything I've read said that it was because someone was smoking in the ammonia room or whatever. Ammonium nitrate is stable, until it gets too hot, too quickly. Which is where the original fire comes in. It lit the ammonium nitrate and ka-boom.

One of the cops in our building is there. At present, there is no confirmation of anyone smoking, but it may be true. I won't believe the news media (you know, the ones that reported around 2pm yesterday that there was a suspect in custody for the Boston Bombing...) until there is an independent confirmation. But I allow for this being the cause. I do know that the FD was there fighting a fire before the explosion.

According to state records, the plant has been there since 1962. The school and nursing home (judging by photos) appear to be newer. SOME (but not all) of the homes also appear to be newer.

that is the problem. who the heck decided to build houses around a place like that. i know that most of those houses that where damaged by the propane depot that exploded in Toronto were built after the depot was built.

Really? I heard it was a internal malfunction in the main storage tank...

Actually what people don't realize is that anhydrous ammonia is very similar to propane. A friend of mine has a cng/propane engine running on anhydrous!
