Post Off Road Light Input

I picked up a '99 Ram 1500 last March and its been a slow work in progress. I've got a brushguard on the front with a set of KC Hilite Daylighters on it right now. I'm slowly gathering parts this winter so I will be ready to continue working when i return home in the summer. I have another set of lights to put on the brushguard, a second battery and tray to mount under the hood. I plan on buying a light rack for the roof from carr.com (http://www.carr.com/store/carrlowprofile.asp). My question for all of you is, should I stick with the 6" round daylighters on top as well, or switch to 5x7 rectangle lights?

Well here's mine in my sig with 6" round lights on my rollbar, might give you an idea of what it would look like.... Although I am strongly thinking of going to rectangular lights as well, so I'm kinda in the same boat as you....

Nice lookin truck ya got there, welcome to DF! We have tons of info here to sift through, enjoy!

Welcome to the forum!

Rather than worry about the styling, I'd be more concerned with what the lights are supposed to do and selecting some that will do it well. Aesthetically, I prefer to keep all of the auxiliary lights the same shape because I feel that mixing round and rectangular just looks hokey. But hokey or not, the lamps should function as intended above all else because nothing looks as bad as a wrecked front end.

The 6" round light put out 240,000 candle power and the 5x7 are 167,000 candle power, and only a $5 difference per pair. With 4 already going to be on the front bumper, i was looking at the ones on the roof for more aesthetics than function, but don't get me wrong, they definitely will be used for their intended purpose here in Northern Michigan. And Mr. Nason, how did you route the wiring from the lights on the roll bar to the battery and to the switch in the cab?

That roof light bar is going to look so goofy. I've seen them, they look terrible. IMO the only lights that should be mounted on roofs are 9". Anything less is a waste in my book. Instead of one of those fake rollbars, build (or have built for cheap) An external B pillar that rises behind the cab. Put four 9" lamps up there, and if you're really fancy, throw the rack onto heim joints so you can fold it down. Profit!

Current setup with 2 lights: My guard came with 2 holes already drilled to mount lights on it, but I plan to drill 2 more so I can have 4 on the guard. As for the wiring, they came with a complete harness, wiring coming from the lights have a short aluminum sleeve to get them under the hood, then to the battery. On my firewall, between the parking break and break pedal was a rubber stopper on the firewall, I used a screw to put a whole in it and feed the wiring through to mount the switch anywhere in the cab, there is plenty of wiring. Once I install the 2nd battery under the hood, i plan to re-wire all the lights to off the second one.
The light set i got from summit, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KCC-238/ , the new covers i found on ebay, and i also snagged a set of light locks from the KC website, http://www.kchilites.com/accessories...ocks-12-chrome
Took pictures tonight with lights on, should have them up soon

Thanks!
I'm guessing you have them on a seperate switch since they come on by themselves without heads or fogs on, just parking lights...right?

I guess I'll have to go out and look at the firewall today to find that stopper....
Thanks again.

They actually have their own switch, no other lights have to be on, just thought it would bring perspective to the photo.

Wiring coming from the battery (green and white) and you can see it disappear at the top of the bunch of wires (temporarily bunched and zip tied until i re-route when second battery is installed)

Where the wiring comes through the firewall next to the steering column (you can see the back side of the rubber stopper)
