I can remember buying gas for 86 cents a gallon, and Im am not even 30 years old yet. Thats a bunch of $hit.

 

Ya I remember when it was under $1/gal. Those where the days.

 

Think I was making like five bucks an hour, working at a gas station......

Was 3.45 yesterday...... 3.31 today...... volatile is applicable to many aspects of gasoline........

Climbed to 3.19 today, saw it as high as 3.29 near my college (which is ~15 miles from home)

 

I was managing a string of gas stations in '79 when gasoline hit a buck a gallon during the completely fabricated shortage when we had rationing, long lines, and "No Gas" signs. I'd sneak in at 3AM to fill up, knowing to expect a cop to come sneaking up on me before I was done, and feeling better when he did because it meant I didn't have to worry about getting mugged by some hostile passer-by.

Today it's $3.499 for regular, $3.729 for premium at the Chevron around the corner. I'm tempted to top up before the price goes up again.

[Edited to add] Oops, I was mistaken. I just paid $3.789/gallon at the Chevron. Ouch.

 

What's really funny (in a sad sort of way....) is the oil companies are blaming the "unrest" in Egypt for the high prices. (borders on the Suez canal.) Thing is.... less than 4 percent of the oil we import goes thru there......

This is gouging, plain and simple. Be ready for the next round of "record profits" being posted by the oil companies.

 

Fixed that for ya. The stuff Big Oil is doing would be illegal if the energy were carried by wires rather than pipes.

I stand corrected, good sir. Upon reconsidering the matter I realized that there isn't any difference at all. One just sounds so much nicer than the other, like "trickle down" versus "siphon up" economics, or "consumer credit" versus "indentured servitude".

 

These are serious issues, and your argument is valid (read: correct), but I cant help but to laugh at the ironic truth behind your words.

To make this all on-topic: I am currently writing a paper on the sociological impact of issues such as the rising price of oil, and how the power elite profit from the working man's despair ("unregulated capitalism" I'm probably gonna steal that one from you unreg--with your permission of course ); which I will be transporting to school via my gas guzzling dodge ram.

And to anyone who has read my profile: no, I don't know why sociology is required for an automotive technology student .

3.23 at the last station I passed, a 4 cent increase in a few hours... my next fill-up is looking grim.
