well i talked to my brother in law who is in the AF today.....he told me boot camp is now 8 weeks long instead of 6...also he said i wont want to be an aviation mechanic because he said some of his friends said it sucks.....he mentioned the crew cheif thing, and said to try a different field of mechanic, and i can later switch my field.

He also told me not to believe everything the recruiters said, like you guys have said....they are trying to sell things that i most likely wont receive.....BUT, i guess with my height ( 6' 1") my weight is short, and i would need to gain weight....i weigh 155...but thats due to my teeth, and hardly eating the past 4 weeks, and during that I had a 5 dy period where i didnt eat at all, so yea ive dropped some weight....According to what he said, id need to get to at least 175 pounds.

Also the PT he talked to me about. Saying that im going to need to really get in shape, because they need "fit soldiers" so id need to pass PT exams.....So im going tomorrow to get a gym membership to get me gaining some muscle weight.

But he said hes been in 4 years, and i guess hes going to become an officer soon and he said that would equal "richness"......i really dont care how much i make, just as long as my family is taken care of and im not struggling anymore, because i got fired this week from my job because i had to bring my daughter to a doctors appt.....yea my boss was a *****.

So im going to do some more research and see what field i can do thats not overcrowded....

But please, im open to get all the information i can.

I'm glad the Coast Guard was mentioned cause I was gonna suggest you look into that as well. I would think it's a bit safer then anything else. I guess the firefighter/EMT in me is more for the Coast Guard than anything else after reading all this lol

You should have no problem with PT in basic. Especially if you go Air Force.

trust me the other day when i started working out (sunday) i was struggling just to do 20 push ups lol......but today, i can do push ups pretty quick...i did 15 (3 sets) instead of the 10 i had on my charts....but i can do them pretty quick now, but after my workouts, im wiped...i REALLY need to get in shape.....probably going to the high school track to do some running this afternoon....i guess 4 laps around is a mile, so thats probably what ill run. but i smoke butts still, but slowly leaning off them....i dont even know if i have the endurence to run a mile lol.

Basic training is going to be a perfect opportunity to quit. When I went thru, it was two weeks before we got our first smoke break, and there was no smoking in the barracks.... unfortunately.... about the only way you got a break later in training, was if you were a smoker......

^^ Start jogging and work your way up with the running. The thing I learned while with the Marines is that singing the cadence does help with breathing. If you have a partner, talking while jogging will help with your endurance. When I returned to my ship after school with the Marines, I ran the 1.5-mile on the PT in 9:12, which was about a 3:40 minute improvement. Granted, I was 21 at the time, but it was still an great improvement.

if you really want to get into good cardiovascular condition- do wind sprints..

set up a course of 100yd intervals.. jog the distance, turn around and sprint back.. turn, walk or jog back the 100yd, and sprint again.. 4 times a week.. do these until you're dragging your lungs behind you and your quads feel like they are on fire.. you'll KNOW you're getting somewhere when your legs tire before your lungs do..

distance running rips weight off of you like nothing else you can do.. it is hell on joints though.. if 'shape' is what you want- sprint..

as far as building muscle: the toughest thing to wrap your head around is that DIET is 90% of maintaining muscle, and at least 50% of building muscle.. You gotta push yourself in the gym- tearing it down is the only way to damage muscle fiber.. the fiber comes back stronger (you recover), and you do it again.. at some point the muscle says to itself "muscle" it says, "if you don't want this *** hole to keep breaking you down, you're going to hafta bet bigger".. and so it does..

i'm familiar with Marine boot camp.. I really can't speak of the others except for what I've heard.. I can tell you this though- your 'condition' will be MUCH better when you leave there.. In 13 weeks, I went from 210 to 165 back to 205.. I could have hidden in a drinking straw I was so thin.. but I was one in shape fool..

i know what you mean about those sprints.....we did them in football in high school, and we called them suicides, because they DO take a toll on you......i know what you mean on that.

But i got to research some good diets that would be good for me....i eat eggs, bread and peanut butter, and salads ALL the time...some of my fav. foods.....is that a good start to the diet?
