Differential fluid type?
Hey guys, I almost made a catastrophic mistake with my Durango's diff fluid. Now I'm concerned about my Ram.
I've some threads on this forum for rear diff fluids, but I don't know what rear end I have and whether I need the friction additive.
I have a '96 1500 Ram, 2wd, 5.9, auto
Can someone help? Thanks guys.

Front Axle Gear Fluid - Dana 44 and Dana 60:
SAE 75W-140 Synthetic gear fluid that meets MIL-L-2105C and API GL 5 Specifications
Nearly everyone who makes engine
oil has a line of 75W-140.
Rear Axle Gear Fluid - Chrysler 9.25, Dana 60, 70, and 80:
80W-90 gear lubricant in normal conditions
75W-140 Synthetic gear lubricant for heavy duty or trailer towing intended uses.
Both must meet same specifications as above

look on the rear axle tube, driver side.
you might be able to find the original part number sticker, which will say something like "chrysler 9.25" OPEN or LIMITED SLIP.
if you don't find it, look in the glove box (some years) or under the hood sticker (other years) for those same words.
failing that, you can email dodge for a Build Sheet.
if you can't tell whether you have LSD or not, then go ahead and add the friction modifier anyway. its not overly expensive, $5-10.
as far as the gear oil itself, anything with GL5 rating is fine. walmart sells 85W90 and 85W140 in the gallon jug for about $12.
another test for LSD is jack up one rear wheel and try to turn it. if it easily turns, its likely not lsd, at least not one that works.

Ok cool thx guys. I'll see if I can find anything on the truck. I've seen somewhere on here about getting a build sheet- sticky thread I think. I never looked at it but didn't know you could do it by email.
Ok guys, i managed to get a build sheet. This is what it says about the rear end:
DMDS 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio
DRBS Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle
In the hood area, I found the sticker with a few specs. It said Chrysler 9.25.
The "LD" has me stumped. Still no clue if it needs LS additive
