I here horror storys of the 305 . Of it was a 350 or 454 it would be nice ! But if nothing wrong with yours why not keep it ? I've seen people go well over 250 k in these trucks
283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400... They're all essentially the same engine except displacement.. parts interchange throughout, outside the cylinders that is. The 302 was a 283 with a 327 crank, or a 327 with a 283 crank, however you chose to do it, before Chevy bowtied the thing in '67.. the interoperability is what sets them apart from furd and mother mopar.. and why they are so easy to rod..
To my knowledge, there ain't a thing wrong with a 305.. just another small block Chevy is all. Heads, headers, intakes.. you name it, can be easily found and are cheap.. if I got my hands on that truck, I wouldn't be able to help myself.. it would be a fighter for sure..

I've heard horror stories about every motor, every vehicle. Lord knows I heard a lot of them about the ram transmission. But, I'm betting on the low mileage GM drivetrain outlasting the 170k mile dodge drivetrain. Ye old dodge might go on to 225k or more with little issue, but low miles is good miles to me unless its an absolute crapper vehicle. I'm hoping the 305 isn't.

This coincides with my thinking also. The problem with the Z71 is they're a dime a dozen. The good thing is, they're a dime a dozen. I will look like everyone else in the crowd, but if it breaks down parts and rebuilds should be a lot cheaper. And be sure if the 305 gives out it will be replaced in short order with a 350, which will probably bolt right in.
I would have a hard time parting with a vehicle I had that much history with....... Is the other truck going to be big enough for you though??
They're both regular cabs. The chevy feels a lot smaller, though. I'm sure its something I'd get used to if I do get it.
I sold an old jeep cj with a factory V8 and manual tranny years ago that I drove for a lot of years. I missed it for a long time, looked at every cj I saw for sale but never bought another one. I got over it, but I do still miss the manual tranny lol.
