Default 727 Transmission?

I'm looking at getting an extended cab 2nd gen and I found an 01 that is pretty clean but the guy swapped out the stock tranny for an old 727 mopar transmission. Anyone here do the swap or have any input on the durability of it, should I stear away from getting it or go for it?

For these trucks I'm not sure how you could get much worse than the 46RE. Sorry don't know anything about the Mopar 727.

from wikipedia
A727

The A488 was replaced in 1962 with the A727 (later 36RH and 37RH), with an aluminum case to reduce weight by about 60 lb (27 kg). The A727 incorporated a parking pawl and various internal improvements, and used a 10.75 in (27.3 cm) or 11.75 in (29.8 cm) torque converter. The heavier-duty A727 Torqueflites became — and remain — popular for drag racing and monster truck applications because of their controllability and strength.

I have a built 727 in my Dakota...Love it. It depends on how much you drive, if you have to pass emissions, and your gear ratio...No OD, a 727 is a three speed. You will have to get the Auto flashed out of the PCM, and use a manual valve body. I'm guessing that has been done.

But it'll be a lot faster than a truck with a 46RE...I picked up over a second in my 1/4 mile times.
FWIW...My Ram is keeping a 46RE, I need the OD.

Don't be worrying about durability, them old 727's are STOUT. Just get used to a 1:1 all the time...

I had one behind a 600+ horse 440 and never worried about the trans.

somebody told me once that the 46re's are basically a 727 plus OD. Does that sound right? or do they only share gear ratios?
