to be honest with you I have no mpg gauge... what I did to calculate was fillup from empty and go thru a tank till empty (or just about) while doing a service call that was a couple hrs away so there was some city driving in there that may have boosted those numbers but not much..
honestly I had 4.10 gears and 32" tires on my jeep wrangler and when I went to 4.56 gears it was soooo much better on gas it wasnt even funny...I was always gasing and downshifting to get up to speed prior to changing the gears.

I do, I have an AC VW like you And actually I have a 4 banger camry as a daily driver but I dont dare drive them to some of the places I take my truck....
Its just like the the people that mock old VW,s calling them unreliable toys.... You cant really mock it unless you've got first hand experience and an understanding of them to do so.
If I really want good gas mileage I just find someone else to drive.... or take my Bike, it gets like 40mpg

i looked at that accident scene, and saw in my mind how it unfolded- and determined that driving a truck would always be my thing... call it insurance..

so, my insurance is expensive on gas.. my insurance for wrecks and such isn't too bad, but it still is worth shopping for the best price, right? I'm going to run that truck plain and simple- it is not only functional, but part of my insurance.. while driving that insurance policy, I'm going to try to get the best mileage..

of course, for reasons I don't want to reason with, riding my second vehicle (a motorcycle) is alright..

mental gymnastics.. love it or leave it..
A few years ago, reports came out that showed larger vehicles aren't necessarily safer or crash worthy (eg, some trucks & SUVs). I drive a Crown Vic (nuff said) and it's rated to achieve up to 23mpg highway. FWIW, I'd take an older Mercedes Benz against any pickup and see who is the worse for wear. I'm seriously edging ever so closer to an older Benz diesel and will never drive with any concern for my safety unless some a-hole launches an air-to-ground missile attack.

I doubt any of us is delusional to think we will be competing with a Prius for mileage.

However here is why it's not a waste of breath and it's totally worth considering all potential aces in the hole. It's not unheard of to go from say 8 mpg to say 15ish mpg with a blown plenum and stretched timing chain fix along with a few few well placed efficiency enhancement mods such as exhaust, efans and etc...nearly a 50 % efficiency increase. With my 35 gallon tank and assuming $3 per gallon that's an extra 245 miles (7mpg increase times 35 gallons) of range per fill up which at the 8mpg efficiency level is worth over $90 (245 miles divided by 8mpg times $3 per gallon) per fill up.

Over the life of the truck that adds up to some serious scratch.

Ethanol is crap and damages fuel lines; carbs and dry's out seals and anything else it comes in contact with over time. WE have to rebuid carbs and replace fuel lines on all our small engines every year bc of the junk and it makes them run like crap.. bc the Fuel/Oil mix is off bc the fuel is deluted with this junk.

The state of Texas is about to increase from 10% to 15% which means even less fuel for your money. Guess what that means for our MPG and Performance.. It will take more fuel, more $$ to equal the same thing..

And we "Generically speaking" are stupid to rise up and fight against it and allow it to continue.. yet we complain about high fuel costs..

I agree with what you said; however, it's typically people posting here who are getting 12mpg with a 5.9L 4x4 running 33s and can't understand why, hence why I chuckle and laugh. It's a gawddam truck, and like I always say, trucks are for hauling cargo, they are not for hauling ***. My truck can haul 5,000lbs very well, yet my Mazda can't. Conversely, my Mazda zips along the roads very well and very efficiently whereas my truck doesn't.

I originally did not put it (Star Tron) in my vehicles for the fuel economy, it just happened to be an unmistakeable side benefit. In what I found with the product completely stopping the effects of ethanol in all my small engines I decided to try it in my vehicles. It's here to stay as far as I'm concerned...

BTW Augie, 4.56s made a HUGE difference in my "in-town" mileage. A good 2 mpg with my 35s. Highway is about the same as it was with 3.92s and 35s. But now I'm talking a completely different transmission here in a 545rfe that essentially has two over-drive gears...

Are you not able to buy straight gasoline in your area? If not, that's a damn shame.

Many seem to miss the bigger picture. There are limits to what can be achieved when you are trying to drive a 5000 plus pound sail with knobby tires into the wind at 70mph. There are no miracles to be had here, that's for sure. About the best we can hope for is slightly more tolerable levels of pain at the filling station.
