Dodge Ram V10 Conversion Questions

Default Dodge Ram V10 Conversion Questions

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500. It has the 5.2 V8 Magnum in it with a 5 speed transmission. I am looking at putting a V10 in it. Just got a few questions about the process. Pretty much my main question is if the V10 will bolt up to my transmission. Or am I going to have to find a donor truck with a V10 AND a standard transmission? I know I need a donor truck, for the computer and wiring harness and all that good stuff. And will I have to beef up my frame? If anyone could help please do! I could use the help!

No it won't bolt up, yes you will need to find one with a stick. I would suggest putting your truck on it's frame. You would need 2500 axles too. I would suggest you just sell yours and buy a v10 actually. It would be a lot simpler.

Absolutely correct You will find much more aftermarket support for that mill as well, in addition to limitless amounts of information on this forum about the magnum v8's.

Ok. Another question. Should I put a turbocharger or supercharger on my 318? Which one is more reliable? And I also am quite concered about fuel economy. I want raw power, but I also want better fuel economy.

This is all going onto another engine. The one in my truck has over 256k miles on it. It definately is a tired engine.

A turbo will almost always get better fuel mileage over a supercharger. A supercharger is always being spun by the belt and consuming power, when not in boost a turbo is only a small exhaust restriction. I get the same mileage now as I did when I was NA.

More reliable depends on the parts being used, not all turbos and superchargers are created equal. With a turbo you never have to worry about belt slip, which is common on pretty much ever supercharger kit for Magnums. If you run a remote turbo like me, you've gotta use a quality oil scavenge pump.

dodgeman, I have dreams where I take an 70's 4 door dodge body and put it on a v10 frame that had a tree or something ruin the cab. I'm hoping my dad's v10 has something like that happen in a few years.

There's plenty of wrecked v10's out there!!! Don't go wishing that fate on another one!!!

The problem I have is it's a fine line, I need something where it isn't ruining a perfectly good truck, but it doesn't have a bad enough problem where taking off the body isn't the only thing major to deal with. I think the cab mounts and parts of the cab are really rusty on my dad's, but the frame is still nice. I don't want any trucks to die for my dream though. But how awesome would that be? old style with new suspension and drivetrain?
