Looking at Gen 1 and Gen 2 Ram 1500s
I think this is the right place for my question.
Anyways, I'm wanting to replace my current vehicle (95 Chevy Suburban that has seen one too many miles) with something slightly newer. I've been looking around at used truck prices and the 2000-2002 Dodge Ram 1500s seem to be around my price point.
So far all my googling has told me about Dodge trucks is that they get pretty low MPG and the dash boards tend to crack. I'm used to bad gas mileage and there seems to be plenty of aftermarket fixes for the dash issue so neither of those really bother me.
I'm hoping you guys can fill me in on any issues I should expect to run into with these older rams and things I should look out for.
Thanks

Welp, the 2nd Gen Ram's don't get GREAT gas mileage but they weren't BUILT too either. I seem to be averaging 12.5mpg rural driving, other's have higher and lower numbers.
Most of the dashboards do crack, but as you know there are caps and full top replacement's.
Most of the transmission's in the 2nd Gen era are kinda iffy, the 46RE probably at the top of the list but, some people have loads of original miles on theirs and have no issues.
There is the infamous plenum issue, stickied at the top of the 2nd tech section.
drewactual has an '02 so he could fill you in on any of the big differences between the later 2nd Gen's and the '02 2nd/3rd hybrid...
Look for an '01 Off Road Edition, they supposed to be the cream of the crop for 2nd Gen's.

My ORE was my first vehicle that I ever owned. I got rid of it cause I thought I would be happier in a Wrangler. Traded it in and got the Wrangler and I missed the truck every since I drove off the lot in the Jeep. I loved the Jeep but then I wanted this Cobra I saw.. That was the dumbest thing I have ever done. Finally needed to get back into a Ram and the dealer GAVE me the one I'm in now.. Needles to say im looking at a new ride to replace this one..
