$3,500 for 130,000K is about right, I just got a new gen 2 and mine had 98,000K for $5,000.
Look for ANY visible leaks, weather it would be from radiator, oil pan, transmission/trans pan, look at Power steering pump and lines for leaks, check the valve covers for oil leaks, inspect the exhaust system, and inspect the differential pumpkins for leaks.
Most likely you will see some sort of rust, look under the truck on the inside, on the metal for signs of major rust, typical spots are along the bottom of the truck, rust on the doors, and wheel wells.
Make sure the transmission is shifting properly. Make sure you take the truck to a parking lot and do some figure 8's and check the steering for pops, noises, and grinding.
If it is a 4x4, check the four wheel drive system, making sure it engages all the gears, make sure you try it out on a stone parking lot, do NOT use the 4x4 on a dry road.
hmmm that's about all I can think of now.

Check tranny fluid in Neutral. See if it is a light red color and not burned.
Remove air cleaner and look insude throttle body with mirror and flashlight. You are looking for oil pooled inside on the bottom of the intake. If it is there, the plenum gasket is blown.
Bang on cat and see if it rattles.

The transmissions usually get beat up pretty good from the 5.2/5.9 engines, big engines with torque. Good thing is they are not too hard to find at a junkyard or to rebuild one. Engines can be a bit more expensive to rebuild.
Truth of the matter is your taking a chance with ANY used vehicle you buy. You can do all your research and think you are getting a deal and then bam, tranny goes or head gasket. I believe a member on here had his tranny go after 4 days after he got it... Crappy luck!

Take your time while checking out a truck, check ALL functions of the truck. Test the E brake! I just went to use mine for the first time and it is in need of severe adjusting...
Something I forgot to check... Take a good ride in any vehicle, good 20-30 minutes til everything is warmed up and running like it should.
Hope that helps!
Now go find a bad *** rig!!!
