Perfect example was a few years ago (approx 5), when I first moved to the area where I live now, the police chief and several deputies were arrested for running a meth distribution ring. They were busting all the competition and making/distributing a whole crapload of the stuff. When the investigation went down it ended up implicating quite a few other cops in the area from other offices.

The only busts come when someone gets stupid, usually by freelancing but sometimes by doing something egregiously stupid in full public view. The roster changes and business as usual continues. But, ya know, we have elections every now and then so we can pretend that we're not a totalitarian regime so it's all good.

The drug war will continue as long as the current status quo is ….well…the status quo….
The whole “homeland security’ has been an economic boom for a new “security” industry, making billions per year – paid for by taxpayers. Local police departments have assault weapons AND assault vehicles, plane, helicopters, and now, on the Texas border – drones. Local police departments with drones – really!
Back to the original topic kind of……why can’t they prosecute oil executives for price fixing…….just wondering…..
- Insatiable drug appetite here.
- Ease of sending guns and money there.
- People in power making money from drugs………..

Rather than prattle on, I'll just suggest anyone interested to know how the US government sits on both sides of the so-called War on Drugs read Gary Webb's "The Dark Alliance", James Mills' "The Underground Empire: Where Crime And Governments Embrace", and Carol Marshall's "The Last Circle". The last sounds somewhat fantastic, but I've seen it with my own eyes because my family's been in those hills for more than 70 years and not all of 'em are keen on visible means of support. From what I've seen, the War on Drugs is all about the federal government maintaining its control of the black market.
If we're going to judge a country's right to self-rule on the level of corruption of its government, we might as well start getting used to the idea of living without the stars and stripes.

Yep. Your statement just got me to thinking, and one of those thoughts was that some folks hereabouts might like a little historical reference material that sheds some light on what's happening and why. Or might not like it -- it flies in the face of some currently popular radical right propaganda. It's apparently the thing to do now, hating our neighbors to the south.
Speaking of which: The Five Stages of Fascism [PDF] by Robert Paxton (1998) is an interesting read.
Edited to add: I somehow forgot to make the obvious point: The War on Drugs and the government's heavy involvement in the black market dope trade began at exactly the same time, and in the same (Reagan/Bush) White House. A point worth pondering, if ya ain't pondered it yet.
