Yep. Your statement just got me to thinking, and one of those thoughts was that some folks hereabouts might like a little historical reference material that sheds some light on what's happening and why. Or might not like it -- it flies in the face of some currently popular radical right propaganda. It's apparently the thing to do now, hating our neighbors to the south.
Speaking of which: The Five Stages of Fascism [PDF] by Robert Paxton (1998) is an interesting read.
Edited to add: I somehow forgot to make the obvious point: The War on Drugs and the government's heavy involvement in the black market dope trade began at exactly the same time, and in the same (Reagan/Bush) White House. A point worth pondering, if ya ain't pondered it yet.

The government involvement in the dope trade practically stopped during the Carter administration, because Carter strongly disapproved of it. Then the CIA took over the White House in 1981 and the rest is history.
The Taliban didn't shut down opium production until 2000/2001, but when they did it was in one swell foop. The Bush-43 madmenistration rewarded the Taliban with a $43 million grant for their success in May of 2001. It apparently wasn't enough to get Unocal their pipeline project back...
