Default Starting Problem.

Hello, I am new here looking for some help. I own a 1997 Ram Sport 1500 5.2 L V8 with approximately 170,000 miles on it.

here's the backstory... My wife was driving my truck she went to pull out of our driveway, left the truck idleing for a moment while talking to her sister. the truck stalls, she comes back and cannot get it started. calls me when I look at it. the engine turns over but does not start. A friend who had taken some auto mechanics and while not the greatest mechanic offered to help me look at it. we took off the bed, replaced the fuel pump put it back together, still didnt work. (he paid for the fuel pump..only reason why I replaced it.) he then brought over an ohm meter and we werent getting spark to the distributor. I replaced the Ignition coil. as I had recently (about 18 months prior) replaced cap and rotor, wires and plug and put a new starter in it. we checked furthur back and are not getting Battery Voltage in the plug that goes into the Ignition coil. my battery was old (about 6 years) and went ahead and replaced that as well.

I had never heard of the cam shaft or crank shaft sensors but could this be the problem? or the computer? any other ideas of what it might be? well I appreciate any help

thank you

Raymond

Unscrew the precat o2 sensor and see if it starts before spending any more money.

You will only have power at the coil for about three seconds after key on, unless you are actually cranking the engine...... Does the fuel pump prime?

the fuel pump does indeed prime. and there is less than .3 Volts heading to the Ignition coil while cranking.

plugs are new about 2 years ago (complete tune up March 2010) new starter June 2010 and new Ignition Coil and Battery, and Fuel Pump April 2012. All of that looks good.

that is why I asked about Cam/Crankshaft sensors I heard those along with Oxygen sensors can cause some of the no start, no voltage to coil problems.

Need to verify that you do indeed NOT have power at the coil while cranking.

I have put a volt meter on it, while cranking it. it is only .3 volts or less getting to coil.

Swap the ASD relay with the horn relay. (you can find them in the PDC, right behind the battery.)

I replace the ASD relay already it was a $12 part. I wasnt getting continuity through so just went ahead and replaced it. also checked all fuses and the other relays while I was at it.
