turbos too good to be true??
So, the idea of running a hx35w holset turbo (stock cummins turbo), at low boost, in a remote setup, just for the possibility of a bit more power, and mpgs, has been stuck in my head for months now. Only reason I chose that turbo, is because alot of the 5.0L stangs are running them, and my trucks a 5.2L. Shouldn't be too much of a difference. And from what I read on one stang forum (I know taking info from the dark side, could be hazardous to my rig), the hx35w is adjustable/ wastegatable to run 5psi to 30+ psi, without major lag.
Well, browsing the web, I ran across this. It's not a flea-bay cheap-o, but it does come from china, so it might be knock-off or cheapo. On their site, they have plenty, that have holset stamped on them, so I'm not sure if it's actually the real deal. But from what I can tell, a brand new turbo is running 100$-200$ according to the page. Is this too good to be true?? Or shall I just stick with hunting on craigslist, to hopefully find someone with a cummins, that swapped out their stocker for something bigger, and would be willing to give up their hx35 for a couple hundred bucks? Or anyone have any suggestions, to a different size/ model turbo that would be sufficient?
I'm not trying to run 25psi or anything wild, or else I'd have to spend another 2-3-4 grand on internal engine parts. I realize certain things would have to be beefed up, depending on boost, but I've read these motors can handle up to 7psi, relatively safely. I probably wouldn't even push it that hard. I'm more looking for mpg's, than anything. I don't race, although the sweet sound of a turbo whine, would make it hard to resist mashing the gas pedal down. Any thoughts???

From what I can tell, they are probably legit. Seems cummins has a joint venture with dongfeng in china...... and, as cummins now owns holset...... Yeah, good chance they are indeed the real deal. Prices DO seem pretty cheap though......
I don't think that you will get better MPGs. Considering that you will need to upgrade to 36# injectors to run your turbo, it is not going to sip gas. \

LOL. Yes, I did know about that alibaba character. But that's just the name of the site. Check this one out. They show the plate on the side of it. It does seem to be a legit, brand new Holset hx35w, for use on the cummins turbo diesel, at a third of the price of a brand new one from a stateside company.

I'd like to learn how to tell the difference, cause I've read a bunch of nightmare stories of the ebay cheapos. Although I did read one, where a team intentionally used a twin knock-off ebay turbo setup to make nearly 700 HP in a '55 with a chevy 350. They did mention, they were on the brink of blowing stuff up though. But it can be done. :P
I don't know. I'm tempted to be the guinea pig on this one, and spend 100$ on the turbo, and maybe take it somewhere in town to have it checked out, see if it's worth a crap. Oh, and STS turbos website/ the powerblock episode I watched mentioned slightly better mpg's with the use of a remote turbo, since it "helps" the engine breathe. The engine isn't sucking air, it's being force-fed. I don't know though. I'm a rookie, and will probably blow my motor up. Suppose I better save up for a 360 longblock before I slap this turbo on my 5.2. HeHe.

I would be interested. I emailed the Minton junkyard, that I read about in another post here on the forum last night about a stock turbo, and they emailed me today saying they had one off an '02, they'd give up for 400$. I'm not willing to drop that much. 150 is more in my price-range.

And really the HX35 is too small, it works, but it's small. You're also going to want to find a 21cm turbine housing off of an H1C from a 1st gen dodge. I'm using a WH1C (same as the HX35 basically) with a 21cm housing. I'm upgrading to a front mount and going with a 60mm 6 blade HX40 and I plan to machine a .68 a/r p-trim housing to fit it. I also have a Turbonetics 60-1 turbo with said housing on the way that I picked for a whole $200. the 60mm HX40 is capable of flowing 69lb/min of air compared to the HX35 which are usually around 55lb/min.
MPG wise it should stay the same, assuming you aren't driving the hell out of it. I even get into boost quite a bit and still get the same MPGs I did N/A.

Thanks for the info. I was kind of hoping you'd chime in, since I knew you were running a remote turbo. So do you think I should just quit hunting down a hx35, and go for the turbonetics 60-1 then?? And does that .68 a/r p-trim housing have to "made" or is it something that can be bought, because I really dont have the tools or the know-how to fabricate something like that. Or should I try to find the HX40? I've read a little bit about those as well. I just figured it'd be easier to get ahold of the hx35, since it was stock on the cummins engines.
In fact, the freightliner 36 ft. straight truck I drive at work has a cummins diesel, and I started looking at it the other day, and it has the holset hx35 on it. That turbo sounds mean when I'm mashin' on it. And the torque it produces on the diesel motor is crazy. For an 8 1/2 ton vehicle, I usually get going from a red light faster than the cars around me. Love the sound of that motor/ turbo. But it's probably running much more psi than I plan on running. And coupled with the 6 speed tranny that's in the truck, it's got no problem even climbing hills when fully loaded at roughly 13-14 tons.
Edit: Was also going to ask you if you've done anything to your motor besides your 1.7's, M1, and throttle body. Anything internally? How much boost are you running?
