Default Where did I go wrong?

Picked up a 96 1500 4x4, $500.00, with the intentions of making it the farm plow truck. Here are the major problems, RUST, 360, auto, 221,000 miles, Air works, cruise works, PLPW both work, new water pump, radiator, belt, plugs, wires, and air filter. Minor problems include 4 mismatched tires, no muffler- well it was there until it fell off on the way to the salvage yard for a set of tires, and a broken rear spring shackle, also happened when the muff fell off-was one hell of a pothole. Oh, Yeah, it gets 19 MPG if I keep my foot out of it. Put on 451 miles on today running up to Crivitz, and the fuel light JUST came on when I hit my exit on the return trip home. Haven't filled up yet, how many gallons are left when the light comes on? Ordered the Rock Solid, the front end is tight, and the allignment is right on, just have to saw the wheel alot.

Even the radio works. Think I am going to get rid of the '05 Ram, Caravan, do the rockers and door bottoms, and get a southern bed, linex it, and front fenders, and have the truck MACCO'ed for the $229.00 special, or whatever they are charging now.

You went wrong in thinking that we will believe your seemingly awesome story about your POS 2nd gen that you say is nothing but a farm truck and gets 19 mpg even thought that it is 4x4 and has not had an engine work done to it.

We are not idiots around these parts.

I did find a typo in my first post, I paid $1500, not $500.

If I wanted to exaggerate, I'd have said it was getting 40 like a post I saw a week ago. Real numbers- 439 miles on trip meter- reset about 10 miles or so after I filled up with ethanol free premium, 21.703 gallons. I'll even do the math for you: 20.22 mpg.

How many of you non belivers are running 285 tires 4.56 gears, and LOVE the sound of your LOUD pipes every time you leave a stop?

I set the cruise on the flats, use my foot in the hills, and do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to keep it from downshifting out of OD. If there is no one behind me, I'll let it drop 10-15 mph on a hill. Sometimes it takes me 30 seconds or more to get to 55.

I routinely get 32-35 out of my Neon, when everyone else says 28, on the other hand, I can't do better than 14 from my 05 1500, and my G voyager is down to 15 since I installed 215 75 15 fronts for better ground clearance.

On a very well running and well maintained truck 20mpg could happen.... but yours sounds far from both.

We know our trucks. You just got yours. A 4x4 5.9 with a blown plenum is not getting 20....

Xtreme 4x4 did an episode of a gas saving 2nd gen ram...and it was a 5.2.....after about 5k in work the best they got was 18-19....nothing in this world will make me believe that...i have a 4x4 5.9 and have put about 6k just in parts that past 3 years ive owned it. Ive done all my own work so i know it was done right. My truck runs perfect and the best i see @ 65mph with cruise is 13.5....the rest of the forum and myself can agree that number is a little exaggerated
