I just got caught with a water pump failure and could not get my hands on a timing chain I wanted before I needed the truck for work so I had to do the water pump and NOT the timing chain. Gonna order timing set soon, but I am going to be doing it like you did, shortly after replacing water pump and wonder if I can leave the water pump on the timing cover or am I dreaming? I forgot to pay attention while I was in there and am just wondering how to save as much time as I can when i go back in for the timing set. So pissed I didn't have the timing set here, but i didn't think I could wait on the water pump and couldn't locate a timing set I wanted faster than 3 days away and now I see me repeating a lot of the same work.

You are dreaming. Fair few of the water pump bolts also hold the timing cover to the block.

Timing cover gasket set comes with a new waterpump gasket though.
