I thought the piece on the other end (opposite where it connects to the radiator, between the hose and the hard pipe) was the check valve and the flow was towards the back of the truck through that line?
The brass doodad from which that porous hose in the photo exits the hard line is the valve, and the flow there is toward the radiator. Then it's out of the radiator to the aux cooler, and from there back to the transmission where it falls into the pan.
the easiest way to fix all that is to use a tubing cutter and cut the hard line just past check valve (pressure) and crimp ridge (return line). then remove/cut the hoses/fittings on the radiator, and replace it with 3/8 auto transmission hose with worm clamps.
One VERY important tip about installing the remote filter.......DO NOT plumb it in backwards.
That's a sound piece of advice right there. Though mine got plumbed backward by the wrench monkeys at Drive Line Service of Las Vegas, the folks who sell the Transfer Case Saver, and it showed me that my Trans Temp light works, I got away with it. I just swapped the lines around, and went back the next day to let them change my ATF at their expense. The Mega Viper is still going strong 15,000 miles later so I seem to have got away for cheap.
