The cat wouldn't know or care, but the upstream (pre-cat) oxygen sensor would know and the PCM would care.

Ya know that cool misfire detection the PCM does? It's via upstream oxygen sensor. Mixture control? Same point. The PCM really, really wants to know what all eight cylinders are doing, all the time.
