Yeah, I heard some aweful noises that day. I also killed a transmission in my 76 280Z. Lost my synchros I think. I side stepped my clutch going into 2nd and instead of a tire chirp as expected, I got an amazing grinding noise. Sounded like some really loud straight cut gears. I was racing an old fox body Mustang that my friend owned and I got to do the walk of shame to get my car home. The positive though is that I replaced the broken 4 speed with a newer 5 speed. Highway driving was better after that.
