Yeah, kinda like a dog whistle, but the people who are running towards you look more like an angry mob. Lived down the street from a guy who had one. He must have loved not only the sounds that it made, but the crisp night air that he constantly drove around in. It got old really fast.
Lost gear, bad synchro, lots of noise, CRACKED CASE... LOL You're not exempt!
If you know how to drive and maintain them, they'll usually last a hell of a lot longer than an auto, there are simply fewer parts to go wrong. And typically if a manual tranny starts to go south, they can still be driven quite a while.
Most problems I see with manuals is from people not knowing how to drive them and using the wrong fluid (they don't all take gear oil anymore).
My NV3500 has 225k on it, with a lot more torque than rated for and it's holding up very well.
I agree with you that manual transmissions have the ability to out last an automatic, but it is not unheard of for a manual to let go because of a manufacturing defect. The vast majority of them are failures due to abuse though and I think a manual is a little more interesting to drive. Right up until I get in rush hour traffic.
