And they are still falling apart POS's because they airmen who drive them have zero respect for stuff that isn't theirs.
No argument there!

Went and got the truck from my grand parents house today and had an early christmas got $100 gift certificate for geno's and one for alligator performance.
Also after my drive home I filled up the truck and if my math is right, which I checked twice I got about 28 miles per gallon.
I've calculated mileage many times, but I feel like I did something wrong here.
Paid $15.00 at $4.18 a gallon so 15/4.18 is about 3.59.
Then the trip meter said I went 101.8/3.59 is 28.3565......
So I can't see what I did wrong.

This happened to me as well. About a month ago, I filled the truck up and drove 107 miles on the highway. After that I topped off the truck again and just for ****s and giggles I calculated the gas mileage for the 107 miles that I drove and got 18.7 mpg. Sounds great except that I always averaged around 14.2 highway before.

I'm sure there is a reason for this that someone far smarter than I can explain. :P

@ hiusmell

We see these trucks in the campground a little bit, and I have talked to a few of the owners and that is the number I hear when they run m/t 28-32 mpg. I ask them if they want to sell it and there is not one bit of hesitation to the word NO.

The only way to get true mileage is with complete fill ups. Trying to calculate mileage with a few gallons instead of a complete fill up is never accurate. But then again, it is a diesel.....

But why is that? I'm not arguing against it or anything, just trying to understand how it all works and why.

I guess it's because you never truly know how much you have used if you dont let it run empty (or almost), reset the trip meter, fill it up, run it empty, fill it up again and then do the math. That guarantees you are using exact gallons used for miles driven.

^^ JK you are right, but you don't have to run it empty, you just need to fill up to the same spot every time. Then just divide the miles traveled by the amount of fuel it took to fill up.
