It sure sounds like there has to be more electronics to allow the electricity to flow to run the starter. That's what it sounds like to me and more electronics = less durability.
More electronics is not necessarily less reliable. If tip start is as mentioned, it will trip a relay which latches until it starts. Solid state relays are quite reliable.
tip start is probably the thing were you just tap the key over and let it go.. truck will start automatically.. You dont have to hold the key like our trucks
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!! I discovered this last night, when I took the truck to pick up a trailer from a friend. I bumped the key and released it in a manner that would have been too early for my Second Gen, but rather than just momentarily turning and stopping, the starter continued and the truck fired up.
