What do you guys think of this one?
2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Truck SLT $8,875

I like that it's an automatic with manual shift to 4x4. Should this be able to haul my Allis WD if needed? The tractor weighs around 5,000lbs. It's been babied, too.

And then there's this one: 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4WD SLT Laramie

The only drawback I see with the 1998 is it has the 5.2L, which I feel might be a bit gutless with 4WD.
The 2002 was already sold. I'm in the air about the 1998 w/ 5.2L considering NADA retail is $4875, so I am considering holding out for a 5.9L.

I would be wary of trucks that have been babied too much. Sometimes it's an indicator that the thing is a dog.

I believe everything, especially trucks, should be ran and ran hard, but not abused

I would think the 5.9 magnum would be able to tow a 5000lb trailer. It's rated for it at least. Brakes would be a little sketch though

Could also be an indicator that someone takes care of their stuff. I am that way. Wash it at least once a week. Keep the interior spotless. Underneath looks like it came off the assembly line yesterday. I use toothbrushes and q-tips when cleaning....lol

^^ Like jkeaton said. To me, a babied truck is a good indicator it was cared for and didn't have the **** beaten out of it like it was owned by a kid, meth-head, or run-of-the-mill derelict.

WOW trucks are expensive where you live. That 98' around here would be worth about 6 grand TOPS in the same condition. Sharp truck tho, I like the two tone paint jobs like that. I used to have a 98' 1500 with the 5.9, IMO it would pull your orange tractor just fine. Heck, my 93' w150 with a 5.9 and 3.92's is a pulling monster (for a gasser). Ive been using it for work (pulls a 14' enclosed trailer every day) to keep miles off my 08, and it does just fine.

vdub...get the one with the best color! :P

How far you willing to drive for a good deal?

I'd offer that the 5.2 or 5.9 is just fine for that little tractor, assuming you have the tranny checked out. Find a cheaper one knowing with the thought you'll just get a new tranny. All this said considering a rig that has a fair amount of mileage on it, like > 160K.

Don't forget that 00 and newer are dual piston front brakes.

Babied as in never used. Driven like a grandma. Never had to pull or accelerate fast or be used as a truck.

Not as in not taken cared of. I drove a Dodge like mine that had 50k miles and was in PRISTINE condition. It was driven by a grandma type person and the thing couldn't get out of its own way

That 98 was WAY overpriced in my opinion for what it was...It has the 5.2 and almost 200k for crying out loud. The body was clean but dear lord thats not worth 3 grand over the book value! It's also a 15 year old truck...I just can't see 7000+ for it. If i was you, i'd be looking for private sellers anyway. They're usually more honest and more willing to work down on the price...just gotta keep searching for a sweetheart deal

The 5.2 or 5.9 will pull that tractor fine as long as the load is distributed right. I used to pull around 7-10k on a regular with my 1500 5.2 of course I did fry the tranny once .
